Price Tag Chords: Learn the progressions
Price Tag’s chord progression can be boiled down to just four bars repeated, like this:
||: F (I) | Am (III) | Dm7 (VI) | Bb (IV) :||
Interestingly, this opening movement is the same as Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On—I mention this as it’s helpful to hear similar progressions in different songs as you learn to spot them.
While this is just the starting point, the next step is to dive deeper and analyse each transition to understand more about the progression.
The movement from Am to Dm (or III to VI) resembles the end of a minor blues. Compare this to the difference between VI and II, which are two minor chords a fourth apart.
The final two chords, Dm to Bb, are one of my favourites. Compare them to the movement from Bbmaj7 to Bb. I believe Dm7 works better than Dm, as the root of Dm is the third of Bb, which makes the Bb more powerful.
Now, go back to F and Am and compare this to the movement from F to Fmaj7.
Repetitive pop song progressions like this are incredibly clever. There’s a reason we can hear it on repeat for 4 minutes without getting bored!
I’ve designed some TAB to show you how I’d suggest playing Price Tag on an acoustic guitar as well as on the electric in a band, including the licks during the rap section where the chord names change.

The Rise of Solo Female Singers: Jessie J and the Evolution of Pop
When Jessie J’s signature song Price Tag hit the airwaves in 2011, few knew who she was. She had released one single prior (Do It Like A Dude), but Price Tag was the song that truly made her a household name.
2011 marked a high point for female U.K. singers, with Adele, Amy Winehouse, Estelle, and Duffy dominating the charts for half a decade.
In the U.S., Pink, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, and Beyonce had long been established stars, collectively paving the way for someone like Jessie J to seamlessly fit in.
Perhaps the biggest challenge for her was following up on the success of her debut album once the initial buzz had died down.
It wasn’t until 2014 that Jessie J had another major hit, this time with the help of fellow superstars Ariana Grande and rapper Nicki Minaj on Bang Bang.
While Bang Bang became an even bigger hit (with more than twice the Spotify plays by 2023), Price Tag will forever remain Jessie J’s signature song.
Cover bands across the U.K. have had it on their set lists for years, and when it’s pulled out last minute for an emergency, everyone is expected to know it – after all, Price Tag only has four chords!
