Rolling In The Deep Chords: Learn the progressions
Adele‘s smash hit Rolling In The Deep is played in the key of Cm. The chords are mostly diatonic and common, what’s different is the rhythmic placement.
The verse chord progression moves like this:
| Cm (VI) | G (IIIx) | Bb (V) | G Bb |
At the beginning of each bar, the chord from the previous bar is played for an 8th note, before the switch. I’ve indicated this by adding a chord in brackets above (chords + lyrics).
I’ve detailed this in the TAB lesson which you find here: Rolling In The Deep – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
The chords are best played as power chords, like this:
| C5 | G5 | Bb5 | G5 Bb5 |
Their movement tells us subconsciously which are minor or major. Not playing the triad increases the anticipation, genius!
The bridge starts on chord IV, the Ab, goes up to V, then down to III. When this idea is repeated, finish with Gm – G, that’s III – IIIx, like this:
| Ab (IV) | Bb (V) | Gm (III) | Ab |
| Ab | Bb | Gm | G (IIIx) |
You can play the bridge chords as triads or keep pumping power chords. If there are two of you in the band playing chords, one could hold the triad, the other pump power chords.
The only downside to this concept is that you may have to speak to the keyboard player.
Rolling In The Deep’s chorus chords move VI – V – IV – V, like this:
||: Cm (VI) | Bb (V) | Ab (IV) | Ab Bb :||
The chorus tag, which only appears once, uses the same chords, but puts them in a new order, like this:
| Ab (IV) | Bb (V) | Cm (VI) | Bb |
| Ab | Ab | Bb | Bb |
There’s TAB for how to play Rolling In The Deep’s chords on both the electric in a band and the acoustic on your own. On the acoustic, we fit a capo on fret 3.
After studying the TAB, this chord chart is all you need to bring to the gig.

Rolling In The Deep propelled Adele to superstardom!
Adele did well with her debut album, (19) released just two years after she graduated from Brit school.
The album was named after her age and had two big tunes, Chasing Pavements, and a cover of Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love.
Selling 2.5 million copies in the U.K., it had spread the word about this new singer from Tottenham. She even got a Grammy for Best New Artist.
However, it was her second album, 21 (2010) that made her a superstar. With the tunes Set Fire To The Rain, Someone Like You, and especially, Rolling In The Deep, Adele became world famous as the album sold 31 million copies, earning her six more Grammy Awards.
As a single, Rolling In The Deep reached the top five in more than 25 countries, selling a staggering 20 million digital copies.
With all this said, I reckon what Adele found most incredible must have been when Aretha Franklin recorded her tune (check the playlist at the top of this page).
