Chord Progressions – What’s Going On?
Beyond being a massive hit, one reason Moves Like Jagger was quickly picked up by so many bands is its incredibly simple chord progression.
This is the kind of song you can throw onto a setlist at the last minute—whether it’s for a band that forms in the car park 20 minutes before soundcheck at Debbie’s wedding or a last-minute pub gig.
As a guitarist, the only real challenge is nailing the stops—other than that, all you need to do is figure out how to play these chords:

In the TAB, I also dive into the first chord, which only lasts for a 16th note, and whether it should even have a name!
At first, I considered calling it sus2/4, but iReal Pro wasn’t a fan—so I settled on 11 instead, which is essentially the same thing.

Let’s take a look at the finer details of how to play Moves Like Jagger. We’ll start with the original guitar parts before developing the concept further.
To understand the arrangement—when there’s a stop, breakdown, or extra bar—it’s best to consult the lyrics and chords or the chord chart.
Here’s the chorus shown in TAB:
We’re simply moving the same idea from Bm7 (chord VI) to Em7 (chord II).
Next up, here’s the intro/verse part, now with muted strums added—practise this section using the loop in the playlist.
The only change here is the addition of muted strums at the end. This small detail makes a big difference—removing them helps make the chorus feel bigger when it hits.
While it’s great to learn what’s on the original recording, you might also want to make some changes. Here’s example 3, which I really like:
In this version, I’ve moved the Bm chord down the neck so it’s closer to Em7. This does change things—it’s no longer a min7—but I think it works.
Instead of hammering on from the 11 chord, I’m sliding in. For good practice, the example includes muted strums first, then without. Practising both helps build control over when to add them.
Here’s another idea—this one is quite difficult:
I’ve added more strums and muted notes—try it out using the loop below or backing tracks above!
Finally, let’s look at that iconic hook. It’s based on the B minor pentatonic scale:
Try playing this in all positions. I’ve suggested sliding into the first note; for the second, you can slide or hammer on—experiment with both!
On a final note, try playing the vocal melody as well. It’s all based on the B minor pentatonic—give it a go!

A cover band staple since 2011
Released as a collaboration between Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, the song was an international smash hit, selling nearly 20 million copies worldwide. Naturally, it found its way onto every cover band’s setlist, holding its place for at least half a decade alongside Crazy, Crazy in Love, Get Lucky, Mercy, Rolling in the Deep, and Valerie.
Today, it may feel somewhat dated, but it’s still worth studying in depth to understand how a modern disco/dance hit is structured.
Repetition is key in this style—rather than relying on dynamic and harmonic changes from the band, elements are brought in and out, much like a DJ would. In this sense, Moves Like Jagger is more of a production than a traditional live band performance. This has been a defining trend since the millennium, where the role of the producer has often outweighed that of the band itself.
Interestingly, musicians have adapted their playing styles to fit this shift, much like singers have adjusted their phrasing in response to autotune.
Give it a couple of decades, and we’ll see just how much Moves Like Jagger was a part of this evolution.
