Jessie J: From Price Tag to Chinese TV Champion
Jessie J had her first big break at just 11 years old, starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down The Wind in London’s West End. She later attended the BRIT School, a prestigious performing arts academy also attended by Amy Winehouse and Adele.
In late 2010, at the age of 22, Jessie released her debut single Do It Like A Dude. It charted in 12 countries and reached #2 in the U.K., launching her onto the international stage.
The following year, she cemented her status with Price Tag, a global smash that topped charts in 19 countries and sold over 7 million copies. Another hit single, Domino, followed, all taken from her debut album Who You Are, which sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.
However, when the time came to follow up, things got tricky. Her 2013 sophomore effort Alive sold just 100,000 copies and didn’t produce any major hits.
Jessie didn’t back down. In 2014, she released Sweet Talker, and its lead single Bang Bang—a collaboration with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj—was a monster hit. On Spotify, it has triple the streams of Price Tag.
In 2018, she released her most ambitious project yet: a concept album titled R.O.S.E., delivered across four days under the themes Realisations, Obsessions, Sex, and Empowerment. Sadly, it didn’t connect with audiences. That same year, she tried her hand at a Christmas album, but it too underperformed.
Jessie J has never shied away from covers, regularly showing off her incredible voice with songs like I Dreamed A Dream, If I Ain’t Got You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Imagine, and My Heart Will Go On, all of which you’ll find in the playlist at the top of this page.
In 2017, proving again that she’s always up for a challenge, Jessie travelled to China to compete in their version of X Factor, a show called Singer! She didn’t just appear—she won.
Say what you want about Jessie J—she works hard, takes risks, and keeps coming back. Who does that remind me of? Ed Sheeran. They might not always follow the same musical path, but they share what matters most: relentless work ethic.
