Baby One More Time Chords: Learn the progressions

Baby One More Time Guitar Lesson + TAB T

If you want to dumb the chords of Baby One More Time down, you could say: it’s just VI – IIIx – I – II – IIIx on a loop forever.

Thinking in the key of Am, using a capo on fret 3, you’d get these chords:

| Am (VI | E (IIIx) | C (I) | Dm (II) E (IIIx) |

However, on closer inspection, you’d then miss the signature riff that happens at the end of bar 4 and during the intro, a quick GAm, or VVI.

Above I’ve put this in brackets whenever it appears as it’s so quick, like this for the verse:

| Am | E | C | Dm E (G Am) |

Perhaps the intro is the best place to start in order to fit these chords in, here they are in TAB, adjusted to be played on just one acoustic guitar:

Baby One More Time chords and TAB intro

The little dot you find above the chords on beats 2 and 4 means play this short, so dampen just after you played it.

Members get TAB for how to incorporate these two chords into the verse and bridge as well.

In the chorus, once repeated, we add a G5/F and G5 instead of the riff as the vocals go “…give me a”. These chords are adjusted for the acoustic one-guitar arrangement, if you’re in a band, just play FG, or without a capo, AbBb.

These are minor details but they do make the tune what it is. They take you from happy amateur to pro.

Baby One More Time’s breakdown chords move away from the chord progression altogether as it repeats, like this first:

| F (IV) | G (V) | Dm (II) | F (IV) G (V) |

This is followed by the man progression (without AmG at the end), like this:

| Am (VI) | E (IIIx) | C (IV) | Dm (II) E (IIIx) |

On the last line, we get a final twist as we yet again start on F (chord IV) but then change it, like this:

| F (IV) | G (V) | Dm7 (II) | F (IV) G (V) G#dim7 (#Vdim7) |

The more I study Baby One More Time’s chords and play along with the original recording, the more impressed I get, this is a perfect pop song!
