The Singles specialists!

Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane (2002), was a worldwide success. The singles Harder to Breathe, This Love, and She Will Be Loved all charted highly and sold exceptionally well.

Combined sales of the album and its singles eventually surpassed 20 million copies. This success kept the band touring for several years before they released their follow-up, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, in 2007—five years after their debut.

While It Won’t Be Soon Before Long charted well on the strength of its predecessor, its singles, Makes Me Wonder and Wake Up Call, initially performed well but failed to reach the same level of acclaim.

Their third album, Hands All Over (2010), faced a slow start. The singles underperformed, and even a cover of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, along with production by Mutt Lange (best known for working with Shania Twain and AC/DC), did little to help.

A turning point came with the album’s 2011 reissue, which included Moves Like Jagger featuring Christina Aguilera. Ironically, the track that reignited Maroon 5’s success wasn’t produced by Lange but by Swedish producer Shellback and American hitmaker Benny Blanco. Another Swede, Jonas Åkerlund, directed the music video.

Moves Like Jagger became a global phenomenon, topping charts worldwide, dominating award nominations, and selling 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. It also became a staple for cover bands everywhere.

For their fourth album, Overexposed (2012), Maroon 5 continued working with Swedish producers and brought in legendary hitmaker Max Martin. While the album itself performed modestly, selling just over 2 million copies worldwide, its singles fared much better. Payphone sold around 8 million, and One More Night reached 6 million in the U.S. alone. To this day, Payphone remains Maroon 5’s most-streamed track on Spotify.

The deluxe version of Overexposed also featured a standout cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together.

In 2014, the band released V, their aptly titled fifth album. With 15 producers credited—more than the album’s 12 tracks—sales were solid, though not exceptional. Once again, the singles outshined the album, with Sugar becoming the biggest hit, selling 11 million copies in the U.S.

By this point, Maroon 5 had become so synonymous with hit singles that they named their greatest hits collection Singles (2015). Though sales were underwhelming, many fans had likely already purchased their biggest songs.

Their next album, Red Pill Blues (2017), continued the trend of moderate album sales but massive singles. Girls Like You became the standout hit, selling 11 million copies in the U.S.

With the release of Jordi in 2021, Maroon 5’s seventh studio album, the pattern remained unchanged: album sales lagged behind single sales. This time, Memories was the biggest success, selling 4 million copies in the U.S.—a decline from previous hits, but by now, streaming had largely replaced digital sales.

Notably, Memories amassed 1.5 billion streams in Japan and South Korea, suggesting that the band’s world tour likely focused on this region.
