Verse 1
||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
The club isn’t the best place to find a lover so the bar is where I go.
Me and my friends at the table doing shots drinking fast and then we talk slow.
And you come over and start up a conversation with just me and trust me I’ll give it a chance now.
Take my hand, stop, put Van the Man on the jukebox and then we start to dance, and now I’m singing like.
Bridge 1
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
Girl, you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
Come on now, follow my lead, I may be crazy, don’t mind me.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
Say, boy, let’s not talk too much, grab on my waist and put that body on me.

Chorus 1
||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
I’m in love with the shape of you, we push and pull like a magnet do.
Although my heart is falling too, I’m in love with your body.
And last night you were in my room and now my bedsheets smell like you.
Every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with your body.

Shape of You Chords: Learn the progressions
Shape of You is built around a four-chord progression and common tones, creating a never-ending loop that is only varied by stopping or adding a temporary layer.
This style of production is most likely influenced by Ed’s use of the loop pedal, something he became famous for doing and has since stuck with.
The chords in question are VI – II – IV – V in the key of C#m, with extensions, they look like this:
| C#m (VI) F#m7 (II) | A (IV) (Bsus4) B (V) |
As a member, we analyze how this arrangement uses common tones, how this can be adjusted into a single acoustic guitar part, and also developed, example 1 looks like this in TAB.
Here’s a link to the full lesson where we’ll develop that first example: Shape of You – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Ed Sheeran’s biggest hit!
Ed Sheeran‘s biggest hit, Shape of You reached the #1 spot in 34 countries in 2017, selling over 40 million copies.
Due to the inspiration being No Scrubs by TLC, Ed gave some of the publishing to the girls who wrote it, something he didn’t agree to do with Marvin Gaye‘s estate for Thinking Out Loud which is (perhaps even more) similar to Let’s Get It On.
Ed’s career is steeped in controversy about songwriting theft like this which is partly down to that many producers these days start with a track for inspiration and then start rewriting it.
I know for a fact that Ed spent his early career going from one 360 producer to the next, often doing a gig after a full day of writing.
You may think using reference tracks is immoral but as the saying goes: Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just go to work!
If you listen to interviews with Paul McCartney you’ll soon realize that this is what he did too so perhaps it is the way forward…

Intermediate Acoustic
Most intermediate acoustic tunes can’t be played using just basic open-position chords. We have to move up the fretboard and play CAGED barre chords as well.
We incorporate bass lines, add licks, extend chords, and play vocal melodies. Most importantly, we’ll invent second guitar parts and play these songs together.
