A Pop Princess With 143 Million Albums Sold
Katy Perry built her career on catchy melodies, bold visuals, and pop anthems designed to get stuck in your head. With reported sales of 143 million albums worldwide, she became one of the defining pop stars of her era.
Her story began with a little-known debut album, Katy Hudson (2001), a Christian rock record that sold very few copies. By the time she returned with One of the Boys in 2008, she had reinvented herself, embracing a bold new image and a sharper, more playful sound.
The breakthrough came with I Kissed a Girl, followed by Hot n Cold. Both showcased her knack for memorable hooks and sing-along choruses, setting the stage for an even bigger success.

The album delivered a remarkable run of hit singles, including California Gurls, Firework, Last Friday Night, and the title track, Teenage Dream. It went on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide.
California Gurls, featuring Snoop Dogg, was reportedly conceived as a playful answer to Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind, the previous year’s celebration of New York. With Max Martin among its pop-production heavyweights, the track reached number one in both the U.S. and U.K. and became an international hit.
Teenage Dream itself captured the album’s carefree, flirtatious spirit. Behind the colourful pop fantasy, though, Katy’s personal life was less straightforward. She married comedian Russell Brand in 2010, the same year the album was released, but the marriage ended in divorce less than two years later.
Roar and the Years That Followed
In 2013, Katy released Prism, led by Roar, another enormous global hit. Produced by Max Martin (again) and others, the tune became a defining anthem of her career, although the rest of the album struggled to match its success.
Katy continued releasing music, but the chart dominance of the Teenage Dream era proved difficult to repeat. She nevertheless remained a major live performer. Her 2015 Super Bowl halftime show made a huge impression, and her later Las Vegas residency brought her elaborate pop spectacle to another audience.
Her career has included reinvention, huge commercial highs, and periods when the hits came less frequently. But the hits from One of the Boys, Teenage Dream, and Prism remain instantly recognisable examples of modern mainstream pop.
