Never Too Much: Luther Vandross Steps Into the Spotlight
Luther started out as a backing singer for Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder in the ’70s.
This led to him joining a band called Change, created by an Italian producer who wanted to form a group like Chic. Luther only lasted one album before going solo.
His first and most successful album bore the same name as the single that every covers band must play: Never Too Much.
The entire album was written by Luther himself, apart from A House Is Not A Home, which was penned by Burt Bacharach. Never Too Much was later ranked at #362 on the Greatest Albums Of All Time list.
Following this hugely successful debut, Luther continued to release charting singles, particularly when teaming up with female singers. He must have remembered how well his voice had blended with all those stars back in the ’70s.
