Lionel Richie: From Commodore to Global Superstar
Lionel Richie shot to fame when his band, the Commodores, signed to Berry Gordy’s Motown label in 1974. Their first release marked the beginning of a string of hits, including Easy, Three Times A Lady, Too Hot ta Trot, and my personal favourite, Brick House.
To this day, the Commodores still perform live, albeit with new members, as Lionel left in 1982 to embark on an even more successful solo career.
His first solo single came a year earlier, a collaboration with Diana Ross on Endless Love. The song charted at #1 worldwide, signalling the start of Lionel’s iconic solo journey.
Subsequent hits followed, including All Night Long, Hello, Penny Lover, We Are the World, Say You, Say Me, Dancing on the Ceiling, and My Destiny.
We Are the World, co-written with Michael Jackson, became a massive global success, selling over 20 million copies, making it the 8th best-selling single of all time.
