Donny Hathaway’s first choice!
Roberta Flack’s debut album, First Take, was released in 1969 and set the stage for her career. The album featured a jazzier cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye and Marvin Gaye’s hit Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, though it wasn’t a duet.
However, her biggest single from this album was The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which was featured in Clint Eastwood’s film Play Misty For Me. The movie, centered around a stalker who, in addition to obsessing over Clint, was equally fixated on the song Misty.
Her next album, Chapter Two (1970), included covers like Let It Be Me (also covered by Elvis, Willie Nelson, Ray Lamontagne) and Bob Dylan’s Just Like A Woman.
On Quiet Fire (1970), we find covers of To Love Somebody (Bee Gees), Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel), and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (Carole King).
The 1972 album Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway included a rendition of You’ve Got A Friend (Carole King), as well as You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (Phil Spector and The Righteous Brothers).
Donny Hathaway’s duets with Roberta Flack are legendary, and their collaborations are a must-listen for any soul music fan. The synergy between these two iconic singers is unmatched.
In 1973, Roberta Flack reached the peak of her career with the release of Killing Me Softly, which included her signature song, Killing Me Softly With His Song, and another Cohen track, Suzanne.
There was one more classic to come in 1975 with Feel Like Makin’ Love. The title track became a hit and was later covered by George Benson and, much later, D’Angelo.
For the next two decades, Flack’s releases were primarily greatest hits compilations or studio albums without major hits. However, in 1994, she returned to form with Roberta, which included big tracks like Let’s Stay Together (Al Green), The Thrill Is Gone (B.B. King), Angel Eyes (Matt Dennis), My Romance, and In A Sentimental Mood.
If you’re looking for impeccably recorded, mixed, played, and sung soul music from the ’70s, the Roberta Flack albums and songs mentioned here are a perfect place to start.
