Cheryl has strong connections with Toto and Luther Vandross!

Best known for her debut smash hit Got To Be Real, Cheryl Lynn became instantly famous in 1978.

This was the height of the Disco era, which unfortunately took a hit soon after with the rise of the “Disco Sucks” movement—appearing just a year after her debut, while she was still releasing singles from it.

Her third single came out within a week of the infamous Disco Demolition Night on July 12, 1979.

Cheryl’s next big moment came through her collaboration with David Paich, keyboard player from Toto, who had co-written Got To Be Real. This time, she sang background vocals on Toto’s Georgy Porgy, which was released in early 1979.

After this incredible debut year, Cheryl’s commercial success declined, but not for lack of effort.

Following her debut and that iconic Toto feature, she released seven albums between 1978 and 1989. Her final album, Good Time, arrived in 1995.

The best-performing of these was Instant Love (1982), produced by Luther Vandross. It included her second-biggest hit—a duet with Luther—If This World Were Mine, a tune originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (who also famously sang Ain’t No Mountain High Enough).

As a truly mind-blowing vocalist, Cheryl Lynn attracted some of the greatest studio musicians of all time. Just look at this list:

  • Michael Brecker
  • James Gadson
  • Marcus Miller
  • Steve Lukather
  • Bernard Purdie
  • Wah Wah Watson
