Al Green is an American R&B, gospel, and soul singer who rose to major prominence during the 1970s, becoming one of the most influential and distinctive voices in soul music history. Embracing his role as a minister, he became widely known as The Reverend Al Green, recording spiritual music and leading a congregation in Memphis. This period marked a clear transformation in both his public image and his artistic priorities, as sacred themes replaced romantic ones in his songwriting and performances.
In 1988, Green returned to secular music, re-entering the mainstream while continuing to honour his spiritual roots. His later releases demonstrate a mature reflection on love, faith, and life, while his classic recordings continue to define his reputation.
