The Reverend Al Green
Al Green is an American R&B, gospel, and soul singer who enjoyed great popularity during the ’70s.
Among his best-known tunes are Love and Happiness, Let’s Stay Together, Take Me To The River, and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. He also successfully covered A Change Is Gonna Come, Unchained Melody, Light My Fire, and My Girl.
What sets Green apart is that he wasn’t signed to one of the major labels. Instead, he chose to work with Memphis-based Hi Records. Apart from Ann Peebles and her hit I Can’t Stand The Rain, Hi Records found its greatest success through Green’s recordings.
After achieving immense success throughout the ’70s, Green shifted away from the commercial music world and spent the ’80s singing strictly gospel. Indeed, Al Green became The Reverend!
In 1988, he made a comeback and has continued to tour and release albums ever since, with his latest release coming in 2019.
