The Queen of Rock & Roll!
The peerless Tina Turner—known by fans as The Best, and by critics as the Queen of Rock & Roll—lived a life like no other.
She began her career alongside Ike Turner, whom she married in 1962 and divorced in 1978. Together, they had worldwide success with Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits, and the epic River Deep – Mountain High.
Of these, only Nutbush was an original tune, written by Tina herself. River Deep – Mountain High was penned by Phil Spector specifically for her, and Proud Mary was a cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic.
Other covers included Honky Tonk Women (The Rolling Stones), Shake A Tail Feather (Ray Charles), and Come Together (The Beatles).
This era of Tina’s life was immortalised in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It, a must-see for any music fan.
Following her divorce, Tina began plotting a comeback. It took some time, but in 1984 she returned triumphantly with the album Private Dancer, which included singles Private Dancer and What’s Love Got To Do With It. Also featured were covers of Help! (The Beatles), Let’s Stay Together (Al Green), and I Can’t Stand the Rain (Ann Peebles).
The album went on to sell 12 million copies worldwide and was later selected for preservation by the U.S. Library of Congress.
Before her next full album, Tina released We Don’t Need Another Hero for the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome soundtrack—another classic.
Her 1986 album Break Every Rule may have remained true to its title, but failed to deliver the hits Tina had become known for.
In 1989, she bounced back with Foreign Affair, which included Steamy Windows and what became her signature anthem, The Best.
The release of the What’s Love Got To Do With It film soundtrack followed, solidifying Ike’s status as one of the most hated men in music, and Tina—if she wasn’t already—as one of the most beloved women in the world.
Her next album, Wildest Dreams (1996), featured few hits, though GoldenEye (from the 1995 James Bond film) stood out.
In 1999, Tina released her final studio album, Twenty Four Seven. It sold well initially but failed to produce any major hits.
Tina Turner not only left behind a trail of legendary songs, but also inspired generations of female singers. Her influence is perhaps only rivalled by Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, placing her among the most important vocalists of all time.
In 2018, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical premiered in London. A friend of mine, Sharon, auditioned for the lead role and came second. She was offered the understudy part, but in true Tina style, she walked away.
