Intro

| C5 | C5 C/B | Am7 | Gsus4 | C5 C |

Verse 1

||: C5 | C5 C/B | Am7 Am | Am7 C/B :||
You’re the match that lights the fire, stepping stone across the mire. Soul mates to the end.
You’re the voice inside of me, bringing joy and harmony. Soul mates to the end.

Bridge 1

| Dm F | Am7 |
Let’s pack our bags so we can sail away, sail away.
| Dm F | Am7 Gsus4 |
Leave the city for the sea, the ocean’s calling me.
| Dm F | Am7 | Gsus4 C/G | Gsus4 C/G |
When we go back we can tell our friends what we have seen.

Chorus 1

| F Am | Gsus4 | Dm | Gsus4 C |
Close your eyes and feel the breeze, on the ocean. Hear the ocean, singing back to me.
| F Am | Gsus4 | Dm | Gsus4 | C | C |
Close your eyes and feel at peace. For a moment. For a moment, free.

Verse 2

Take my hand, let’s leave tonight, leave those aching thoughts behind. Soul mates to the end.
Write our names into the sand, see new islands, different towns. Soul mates to the end.

Bridge 2

Let’s pack our bags so we can sail away, sail away.
Leave the city for the sea, the ocean’s calling me.
When we go back we can tell our friends what we have seen.

Chorus 2

Close your eyes and feel the breeze, on the ocean. Hear the ocean, singing back to me.
| F Am | Gsus4 | Dm | Gsus4 | C | C C/B |
Close your eyes and feel at peace. For a moment. You’ll be lifted, free.

Outro

| C/E | Am F | Gsus4 | Am F |
And we’ll both be fine, fine. As we drift in time.
| C/E | Am F | Gsus4 | C | C |
And we’ll both feel fine, fine. Fine.

Soul Mates Chords: Master the Subtle Changes That Keep It Fresh

A far cry from Feeder’s indie rock style, Grant Nicholas’s gentle Soul Mates incorporates some clever chord techniques that can inspire any songwriter.

Intro

In the key of C, the progression begins with chord I, then drops to VI (the minor fall), before lingering on a Gsus4, eventually resolving back home to C. It looks like this:

| C5 | C5 C/B | Am7 | Gsus4 | C5 C |

Most memorable tunes utilise a sense of familiarity with a twist. In Soul Mates, the familiarity comes from the classic I – VI – V – I movement, while the twist is the passing chord on beat 4.

Another example of this approach is Avicii’s Wake Me Up. I love spotting these connections between songs from different genres and eras, it helps sharpening my ear.

To get the picking pattern right and to understand how the displaced chord fits on beat 4, you’ll need TAB. Here’s the link to that part of the lesson: Soul Mates – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Verse

The verse is similar to the intro but introduces subtle variations—another great songwriting tip. Small changes can have a big impact. Here’s the verse progression with Roman numerals:

||: C5 (I) | C5 C/B (I/7) | Am7 (VI) Am | Am7 C/B :||

Again, it’s the placement of the passing chords that adds variation and makes these simple chords feel fresh.

Bridge

To capture the listener’s attention, the bridge begins with a II – IV – VI progression. II and IV feel like forward movement, while VI brings a sense of familiarity:

| Dm F | Am7 |
| Dm F | Am7 Gsus4 |
| Dm F | Am7 | Gsus4 C/G | Gsus4 C/G |

The Gsus4 we heard earlier in the intro is varied here with a C/G. You’ll need TAB to get this right (follow the link above).

Chorus

The third section of Soul Mates is the chorus. It starts with chord IV before cycling through previously used chords. The C chord before the repeat feels like a 2/4 bar (though it isn’t, it just feels like it—a clever twist!):

||: F Am | Gsus4 | Dm |1. Gsus4 C :||
|2. Gsus4 | C | C |

Outro

The outro introduces a new chord, C/E, played on the low string and the top three strings (check the TAB for this!). It looks like this:

| C/E (I/3) | Am (VI) F (IV) | Gsus4 (V) | Am F |
| C/E | Am F | Gsus4 | C | C |

Once you’ve mastered the picking pattern (use the TAB!), this simple chord chart will be all you need for the gig.

Should you want to download this chart, here’s a PDFSoul Mates chord chart PDF.

This chart was created using iRealPro, here’s a link to that file: Soul Mates iReal Pro.

Using this and the iRealPro app, you can change the key which is useful if you want other instruments to play with you. On guitar, we think in the key of C but the capo makes the actual key E.
