Feeder: More Drummers Than Hot Dinners!
Feeder is a rock band from South Wales, formed in the mid-’90s by singer/guitarist Grant Nicholas, bassist Taka Hirose, and drummer Jon Lee.
The band hit their peak in the early 2000s with the single Buck Rogers from the album Echo Park (2001), earning awards from indie rock magazine Kerrang!
Tragically, Jon Lee passed away in early 2002. He was replaced by Skunk Anansie’s Mark Richardson, who helped record Comfort In Sound (2002), Feeder’s second most popular album. Mark remained in the band until 2009, when Skunk Anansie reformed.
After his departure, Feeder relied on a rotating cast of session drummers including Karl Brazil and Damon Wilson. I know both Mark and Damon—Mark directed a music video for one of my bands (Head On, Colour Of Noise), and Damon and I toured stadiums for a year with another band I was in (Will and the People).
I remember that period vividly. Every rock drummer I knew wanted in on Feeder, who by then had a loyal fanbase, regular tours, festival slots, and albums in the works.
Still, this era marked a downturn in the band’s momentum, leading Grant Nicholas to explore a solo career. He released Soul Mates, the lead single from his acoustic-driven album Yorktown Heights.
Feeder eventually reunited, releasing All Bright Electric in 2016, followed by the obligatory greatest hits collection The Best of Feeder in 2017.
Their most recent album, Black/Red, was released in 2024—thirty years after the band officially formed.

Soul Mates is the first single from Grant Nicholas’s solo career. As a sensitive acoustic tune, it was a far cry from his previous indie rock band Feeder.
