Shut Up and Dance Analysis + TAB

As with most rock riffs, you must play Shut Up and Dance using not only the correct chords but they must also be played on the correct strings, in the right place, exactly like the original, and for that, only TAB will do.

Once you can play it correctly, use chords to remind you of the intervals you need to play during the intro, instrumental, and chorus 1, like this:

||: Db Dbsus4 | Db Dbsus2 :||

As you can see, we play a Db chord, move the 3rd up to a sus4, back to the 3rd, and then down to the sus2.

The verse is a part that you need TAB for, I’ve included how the bass moves in brackets as that’s what the harmony is.

| Db7omit3 (Gb Ab) | Db7omit3 (Bb Ab) | Db7omit3 (Gb Ab) | Db7omit3 (Db Ab/C Ab) |

It would be so much easier if we played this in D on a guitar tuned down a semitone, or used the Digitech drop pedal, being in the key of Db is so annoying!

The bridge is one of those sections you need to practice on a loop as it can only be played with absolute confidence or it’ll sound like the entire band is falling apart.

| Gb5/F Gb5 | Db5 Bbm Ab5 |
| Gb5/F Gb5 | Ab5 |

The above needs to be played with the correct rhythm. It’s so intricate that writing about it is a bit like dancing about architecture, you need TAB to make sense of it. Then practice it until you can’t get it wrong.

The chorus is the easiest to explain as you just play I – IV – VI – V using power chords, lie back and think of Green Day.

| Db5 Gb5 | Bb5 Ab5 |

Reminiscent of Mr. Brightside in more than one way, it has become a safe bet for bands the world over.
