Locked Out Of Heaven chords and progressions

In the key of Dm/F, Locked Out Of Heaven moves V – VI, V – IV, I – II. Although the I chord has the 3rd in the bass, making it feel as if we are descending to Gm from an A, rather than coming from F, going up.

||: N.C C Bb | N.C F/A Gm | Gm | Gm  C Dm :||

Before the chorus, we play chords I – IIIx. FA7.

The chorus starts on chord IV, making it feel as if we want to move somewhere. From here we go down to II – I – V, like this:

| Bb | Bb | Gm | Gm |
| Fmaj7 | Fmaj7 | Csus4 C | C |

The m8 cleverly uses the same chords as the chorus.

Locked Out Of Heaven gave Bruno Mars credibility

As the lead single off Bruno Mars’ second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, Bruno showcased his versatility with a Police influenced smash hit in Locked Out Of Heaven.

Before this, he’d released Just The Way You Are and Marry You, which were big hits, but hadn’t given him credibility.

In hindsight, Locked Out Of Heaven was the single that took Mr. Mars to superstardom. Following this, he dropped Treasure, 24K Magic, Uptown Funk, and Forget You (released by CeeLo Green), making him a household name.
