Rock Your Body Chords: Learn the progressions

As a guitarist, you could think of Rock Your Body‘s chords as FGEm, since that’s what you’ll play.

However, as the bass plays the F/G and G/A, you should know how that is the full sound of Rock Your Body’s chords.

In order to fully understand the music you’re playing, you should always look into the full scope of the harmony, not just find your part and move on.

To get the sound absolutely bang on, you need TAB, here’s a link: Rock Your Body – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

The chords for that main progression are from the E Dorian (D major). It’s important to know this because of the middle 8 section which looks like this with Roman Numerals:

| Gmaj9/B (I) Cmaj7 (IV) | D (V) Em7 (VI) A7sus4 (II) |
| Gmaj9/B Cmaj7 | D Em7 Fmaj7 |
| Gmaj9/B Cmaj7 | D Em7 A7sus4 |
| C7sus4 (IV) | D11 (V) |

What’s happened here is that we switched the key from D (or E Dorian) to G (or D Mixolydian), you could call this a modal interchange, or a key change.

The second line has a Cmaj7 and Fmaj7 meaning we’re now in the key of C, or G Mixolydian. As these chords happen so fast, you’ll be best off memorizing the TAB.

Coming back from the TAB adventure, this chord chart should be helpful as the structure is a bit nuts.

Rock With You was from Justin’s debut album Justified!

Justin Timberlake‘s Rock Your Body was the third single from his debut album, Justified (2002).

The album sold 10 million copies worldwide, with three additional singles all being massive hits (Senorita, Cry Me A River, and Like I Love You).

Rock Your Body is possibly the one that has proved to have the greatest legacy, still being played by DJs and bands the world over a couple of decades later.

Rock With You was mixed by Canadian wizard Serban Ghenea, I call him a wizard as I once had a track mixed by him for one of my bands.

I had given up all hope and was claiming the tune had to be re-recorded, then I got Serban’s mix back, and my complaining instantly stopped! Unfortunately, the band broke up before that single was released…

There are some insanely talented people out there, plenty of them seem to have worked on Justin Timberlake’s Justified.

Producers for the album include The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), Timbaland, Scott Storch, The Underdogs, and Brian McKnight.

Apparently, the main inspirations for the album were Michael Jackson‘s Off The Wall (1979) and Thriller (1982).
