Rock Your Body Chords: How Modal Interchange Shapes the Progression

As a guitarist, you might think of Rock Your Body‘s chords as simply F – G – Em—and that’s what you’ll play.

However, the bass plays F/G and G/A, which adds depth to the harmony. To fully understand what you’re playing, it’s important to consider the complete harmonic structure rather than just focusing on your part.

To get the sound just right, you’ll need TAB—here’s a link: Rock Your Body – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

The main progression is based on E Dorian (D major), which becomes crucial in the middle 8 section:

| Gmaj9/B (I) Cmaj7 (IV) | D (V) Em7 (VI) A7sus4 (II) |
| Gmaj9/B Cmaj7 | D Em7 Fmaj7 |
| Gmaj9/B Cmaj7 | D Em7 A7sus4 |
| C7sus4 (IV) | D11 (V) |

Here, the key shifts from D (E Dorian) to G (D Mixolydian)—a classic example of modal interchange or key modulation.

In the second line, the Cmaj7 and Fmaj7 suggest a brief move to C major (G Mixolydian) before returning. Since these changes happen quickly, memorising the TAB will be the best approach.

Once you’ve worked through that, this chord chart will help you navigate the song’s unpredictable structure.

Rock With You was from Justin’s debut album Justified!

Justin Timberlake’s Rock Your Body was the third single from his debut album, Justified (2002).

The album sold 10 million copies worldwide, with three other massive hits—Señorita, Cry Me a River, and Like I Love You. Of them all, Rock Your Body may have had the greatest legacy, still a staple for DJs and live bands decades later.

The track was mixed by Canadian wizard Serban Ghenea. I call him a wizard because I once had a track mixed by him for one of my bands. I had lost all hope, convinced the tune needed to be re-recorded—until I heard Serban’s mix. My complaining instantly stopped! Unfortunately, the band broke up before that single was released…

There are some insanely talented people out there, and plenty of them worked on Justified.

Producers for the album included The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), Timbaland, Scott Storch, The Underdogs, and Brian McKnight. The main inspirations? Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall (1979) and Thriller (1982).
