It Takes Two Chords: Learn the progressions
This is a really simple chord progression which makes it an easy tune to add to your Motown/Soul band’s repertoire.
First up, we have a riff that manipulates the 3rd, going down to sus2, then up to sus4. The variation is that at the end of four bars, we don’t have a 3rd at all, like this:

This section comes back at the end of every chorus.
The verse is just a Bb chord. The chorus finally moves to chords IV and V, stops, goes back to Bb, and then repeats it, like this:

Marvin Gaye had a sensational career singing tunes written for him by Motown’s songwriting teams before he took charge and started writing his own legendary compositions such as Mercy Mercy Me and What’s Going On.
Part of his impressive catalogue is the many duets he did with Diana Ross, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Mary Wells.
His best tunes with these women include Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, You’re All I Need To Get By, Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing, and It Takes Two, which you saw above.
These four tunes are perfect if your working band has a male and female singer, It Takes Two definitely has the easiest chords and will therefore be the quickest to add to the setlist.
