I’m Yours Backing Track | Chord Analysis
There are two backing tracks above, I made these using AI by extracting the chords from the original recording so you can play them instead.
The first video is blocked in some countries as I left the vocal intact, the second video is only bass and drums from the original recording.
Practise along with these and my chord chart to prepare yourself for playing I’m Yours with a band live.
Chord Progressions – What’s Going On?
Jason Mraz‘s I’m Yours chord progression for the verse/chorus section is simple and very common with its I – V – VI – IV movement.
In the key of B, that’s:
||: B (I) | F# (V) | G#m (VI) | E IV) :||
It’s so common, that this is recognised as the safe bet for modern hits, I placed it at #3 on my top 10 chord progression list.
Middle 8
Only during the middle 8 do we move somewhere new:
||: B (I) F#/A# (V/3) | G#m (VI) F# (V) | E (IV) | C# (IIx) :||
That last chord (IIx) is outside the key, being major instead of minor wakes the listener up. Compare it with American Pie which also uses this chord.
Here’s a chord chart I made for you, it’s the same as you find in the backing track videos above.

I’m Yours Chord Chart | PDF + iReal Pro Download
Having a simple chart like the above is my favourite. It doesn’t tell you how many times we play the verse or chorus as they have the same chords.
All it does is tell you what the chords are, list the lick as chord extensions and show you the middle 8 chords.
I feel that when you play a song, you should know it well enough, the chart is just a gentle reminder so you’ll perhaps glance at it before you start, maybe as a reminder of what intervals the lick has.
Halfway through the song, I might give it another glance to just remind me of the middle 8 chords, it relaxes me to know it’s there, if I find myself staring at it, I haven’t prepared enough.
The structure is written below the chart as V1 (verse 1) etc.
Should you want to download my chord chart, here’s a PDF: I’m Yours chord chart PDF.
This chart was created using iRealPro, here’s a link to that file: I’m Yours chord chart iReal Pro. Using this and the iRealPro app, you can change the key and even the layout.
In the course, we look at TAB and use play-along loops to learn I’m Yours on one acoustic guitar using a capo on fret 2, doing this means we must change the key to A.
Here’s a full performance of me doing this with a couple of singers. This is one of the first recordings I made for Spytunes, way back in 2007, before Jason Mraz officially released it himself!
I’m Yours | Chords + Lyrics (capo 2)
Intro
| A | E | F#m | D |
Verse 1
| A | E |
Well, you done, done me and you bet I felt it, I tried to be chill but you’re so hot that I melted.
| F#m | D |
I fell right through the cracks, and now I’m trying to get back.
| A | E |
Before the cool done run out, I’ll be giving it my bestest, and nothing’s going to stop me but divine intervention.
| F#m | D |
I reckon it’s again my turn, to win some or learn some.
Chorus 1
| A | E | F#m | D |
But I won’t hesitate no more, no more, it cannot wait, I’m yours.
Instrumental 1
| A | E | F#m | D |
Verse 2
Well open up your mind and see like me, open up your plans and damn you’re free.
Look into your heart and you’ll find, love, love, love, love.
Listen to the music of the moment people dance and sing, we’re just one big family,
and it’s our God-forsaken right to be, loved, love, love, love, loved
Chorus 2 (double)
So I won’t hesitate no more, no more, it cannot wait, I’m sure.
There’s no need to complicate, our time is short, this is our fate, I’m yours.
M8
||: A E/G# | F#m E | D | B :||
And do do do do you…. But do ya want to come on, scooch on over closer dear. And I will nibble your ear, so du ba ba….
Verse 3
I’ve been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror,
and bending over backwards just to try to see you clearer.
But my breath fogged up the glass, so I drew a new face and I laughed.
I guess what I’m saying is there ain’t no better reason, to rid yourself of vanities and just go with the seasons.
It’s what we aim to do, our name is our virtue.
Chorus 3
But I won’t hesitate no more, no more, it cannot wait, I’m yours.
Outro (as verse)
Well open up your mind and see like me, open up your plans and damn you’re free.
Look into your heart and you’ll find that the sky is yours, so please don’t, please don’t, please don’t.
There’s no need to complicate ’cause our time is short this,
oh, this, oh this, oh this is our fate, I’m yours-ah!
Playing I’m Yours on one Acoustic Guitar
Make sure you can see how the chord progression is the same with a capo, by thinking of them as Roman numerals:
||: A (I) | E (V) | F#m (VI) | D IV) :||
I like pairing the chords with that 2nd guitar lick, this gives the chords extensions, like this:
||: A A6 | E Eadd9 | F#m | D Dmaj9 :||
This requires TAB to know how to incorporate it (see how further down this page).
There’s also that middle 8 section to consider which moves down from the I chord, like this in the key of A:
||: A (I) E/G# (V/3) | F#m (VI) E (V) | D (IV) | B (IIx) :||
I’m Yours TAB | Course Preview
A few licks are incorporated into my one acoustic guitar arrangement of I’m Yours (see the full song further up this page).
These are best described using TAB and chords with extensions.
Here’s the first example of how you could play the chords, with the little extensions, making it a chord riff:

Members look at another three examples of how to play this verse/chorus/instrumental section using TAB and a play-along loop as you see above.
Looking at the full lesson series in the course, you’ll find a section about nursery rhyme hit writing in general, and TAB for how to play the middle 8.
This is followed by playing the complete song with a singer complete with TAB.
Finally, we look at constructing a 2nd guitar part so you, me, and the singers can play I’m Yours together.

I put I’m Yours on YouTube before Jason Mraz!
In hindsight, the rest of the world agreed with Spy Tunes that I’m Yours was the song of 2008 but it took a while!
I recorded this tune in 2007 and received over a million plays on YouTube very quickly (the account has since been deleted).
Based on the original EP version (Extra Credit ’05) I decided that if Jason wasn’t going to release this obvious monster hit, then I would!
In May 2008, Mraz finally came to his senses and released it as the first single off his album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.
At first, sales were slow but by late 2009 it was clear that I’m Yours was the best-selling song since the Millennium with 13 million sales in the U.S. alone.
It also spent the longest time in the Billboard charts (74 weeks), a world record at the time.

There’s plenty to learn from playing I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. Before we get into the song itself, we look at hit melody writing in general with 6 specific songs using the same chord progression as I’m Yours.
This is followed by a step-by-step guide, finished off with a 2nd guitar part.
