Marry You Chords: Learn the progressions

Marry You, guitar lesson with TAB.

The ultimate easy-to-learn wedding tune we have from Bruno Mars in Marry You. As there are only three chords, you won’t have to rehearse this one!

Using Roman Numerals, the chords for Marry You are just this:

||: F (I) | F | Gm (II) | Gm |
| Bb (IV) | Bb | F | F :||

This loop never stops, it’s the same chords for all sections of Marry You, could it be any easier?!?

Perhaps for a beginner, it’s tricky as these need to be played as barre chords. Well, the Gm could be an open-position chord, but still, F and Bb have to be barre chords.

The tempo is also pretty quick and if you’ve left the capo at home, and you’re the only guitarist to accompany a singer, you may have to play this, very demanding part:

Marry You chords and TAB, no capo.

Try playing that along with the original recording from beginning to end and you’ll soon discover that playing Marry You’s chords without a capo, is actually really demanding!

Let’s look at how you can find a way around this using a capo.

  • Fret 1: EF#mAE, the F#m chord is barre
  • Fret 3: DEmGD, no barre chords!
  • Fret 5: CDmFC, the F chord is barre
  • Fret 8: ABmDA, the Bm chord is barre.

Looks to me like the best way is to play Marry You using a capo on fret 3, thinking in the key of D. Members find out more as they get TAB for how to play this tune with a capo on frets 1, 3, 5, and 8.

Each position will require the strumming to change, making this a really interesting guitar lesson that will teach you more than just how to play Marry You’s chords.

Marry You charted in the U.S. even though it was never released there as a single!

Released in 2010 on Bruno Mars’s debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Marry You was not released a single in the U.S., but it still reached #85 in the charts.

Worldwide, it was released as a single and did reasonably well, hitting the top 10 in as many countries.

Despite not being a single, the U.S. population ended up buying 4 million copies of it, perhaps this was because they used it as a proposal song!

The Glee cast recorded a cover of Marry You and reached #32 in the U.S., I’ve included their version in the playlist above.

In many ways, Marry You launched Bruno Mars to the world with his easygoing, straight-to-the-point songwriting, reminiscent of Jason Mraz.

Unlike Mraz, Bruno has since gone on to develop in all sorts of directions and become a superstar.

Apart from his own smash hits, he also wrote songs for other people around this time, for example, Forget You for CeeLo Green.
