Marry You Chords: Easy Progressions and Capo Tips
Marry You by Bruno Mars is the ultimate easy-to-learn wedding tune. With just three chords, it’s a perfect choice for beginners, but there are a few things to keep in mind!
Using Roman numerals, the chords for Marry You are simple:
||: F (I) | F | Gm (II) | Gm | | Bb (IV) | Bb | F | F :||
This loop repeats throughout the entire song, making it very straightforward. Could it get any easier?
However, for beginners, the challenge lies in playing the chords as barre chords. The Gm can be played as an open-position chord, but both F and Bb need to be barre chords. The tempo is also quite quick, so if you’ve forgotten your capo and are the only guitarist accompanying a singer, it can become quite a demanding part.
I’ve created some TAB to guide you through this—check out that section of the lesson here: Marry You – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Playing along with the original recording from start to finish will quickly show you just how tricky it can be to play these chords without a capo!
Let’s look at some ways to make this easier with a capo:
- Fret 1: E – F#m – A – E (The F#m is a barre chord)
- Fret 3: D – Em – G – D (No barre chords!)
- Fret 5: C – Dm – F – C (The F is a barre chord)
- Fret 8: A – Bm – D – A (The Bm is a barre chord)
The easiest way to play Marry You might be with the capo on fret 3, thinking in the key of D. In the TAB lesson, I’ll walk you through how to play the song with a capo on frets 1, 3, 5, and even fret 8.
Each position requires different strumming patterns, which makes this a highly engaging guitar lesson. Not only will you learn Marry You‘s chords, but you’ll also expand your skills with these capo exercises.
Once you’ve worked through that, all you’ll need is a chord chart. Here’s one I made for you.

Marry You Chord Chart | PDF + iReal Pro
I may have made things a bit obvious with this chord chart, as I’ve included both the keys of F and D. This means that other capo positions (1, 5, and 8) aren’t quite as ideal.
Even so, I recommend you still go through the process and try out all the positions I’ve provided in the TAB.
If you’d like to download the chart, here’s the PDF: Marry You chord chart PDF.
This chord chart was created using iReal Pro. You can access it here: Marry You chord chart iReal Pro.
With the iRealPro app, you can easily change the key. However, as mentioned, it’s best to play in F, using barre chords as you move around the fretboard when playing with a band, or use a capo on fret 3.
Marry You charted in the U.S. even though it was never released there as a single!
Released in 2010 on Bruno Mars’s debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Marry You wasn’t released as a single in the U.S. but still managed to chart at #85.
Worldwide, it was released as a single and performed reasonably well, reaching the top 10 in numerous countries.
Even though it wasn’t a U.S. single, the song sold 4 million copies in the U.S. alone—likely due to its popularity as a proposal song!
The Glee cast recorded a cover of Marry You, which reached #32 on the U.S. charts. I’ve included their version in the playlist above.
In many ways, Marry You helped launch Bruno Mars to global fame with his easygoing, direct songwriting, which has a similar vibe to Jason Mraz’s style.
Unlike Mraz, Bruno has since evolved in various musical directions and become a superstar. Besides his own smash hits, he also penned songs for others around this time, such as Forget You for CeeLo Green.
