Is This Love Chords: Learn the progressions

Is This Love Analysis + TAB T

Bob Marley‘s Is This Love can be played on the electric guitar in a band, or as an acoustic guitar arrangement, incorporating the main instrument; the bass.

Above, you find it in two keys with lyrics. In a band, you want to play small, rhythmically consistent barre chords in the original key of A/F#m.

On the acoustic, it’s better to change the key to G/Em and fit a capo on fret 2 as this makes it easy to incorporate the bass line. Members get TAB for how to play both in A (electric) and in G (acoustic).

The chords may seem simple but do have several little tricks which, if not studied carefully, can make you trip up.

The first problem is the beginning of the verse, here’s the full verse chord progression for Is This Love:

| F#m (VI) | D (IV) | A (I) E/G# (V/3) |
||: F#m | F#m | D | A E/G# :|| x3
| F#m | F#m | D | A |

As you can see, the first line is a bar shorter. The last bar doesn’t have an E/G# as that’s too similar to the first chord of the chorus, which looks like this:

||: C#m (III) | C#m | Bm (II) | Bm :||

The chorus tag is the most complex section, let’s look at one line at a time:

| Bm (II) C#m (III) D (IV) | E (V) D6 (IV) | D6 | D6 |

We climb from chord II to V, moving back to IV with a 6 extension. Next, we vary it, like this:

| Bm (II) C#m (III) D (IV) | E (V) D6 (IV) C#m (III) | C#m | C#m |

The IV chord, which previously was almost three bars long, is now just a beat before we go down to chord III. This is the highlight of the tune for me.

Here’s what happens next:

| C#m (III) | C#m | Bm (II) | Bm |

In a genius move, we bring back the chorus chords but have a completely different melody. Finally, we move like this:

| F#m (VI) | F#m | E (VIx) D (V) | C#m (III) Bm (II) |

Members look at how to play all this with consistency rhythmically, providing variation by moving around the fretboard. This concept makes it a great exercise, here’s the verse.

Is This Love chords and TAB Verse electric

The little dots above the 8th notes mean; play short. Throughout, it’s the same rhythm, we play a maximum of three strings and move up the fretboard, then down.

Members get TAB for the chorus and tag as well.

Perhaps most interestingly, we also look at a way to play Is This Love on the acoustic guitar as well, completely on our own, incorporating the bass line.

Is This Love is my favourite Bob Marley tune!

One of the world’s best songwriters, Bob Marley, has written some incredible songs.

What’s so amazing about how he writes is that his tunes sound like hymns, like a “traditional”, as if they’ve been around forever.

The fact that he dressed them up as Reggae is secondary, it’s the timeless melodies and lyrics that make it.

Among all these incredible compositions we find Is This Love. Released in 1978 on the album Kaya, the follow-up to what is by many considered the best album of all time, Exodus (1977).

The tunes on Exodus were recorded and presumably written around the same time as the ones on the album Kaya. Ironically, the actual song, Kaya, was recorded much earlier and already released back in 1971.

Can you imagine if he had included Is This Love, Sun Is Shining and Satisfy My Soul in Exodus as well?!?
