Is This Love’s chords and progressions

Much more complicated than one might expect, Bob Marley‘s Is This Love has some strange chords, let’s start with the verse.

Apart from the variations, it’s the same as the intro, just this on repeat:

||: F#m7 (VI) | F#m7 (VI) | D (IV) | A (I) E/G# (V/3) :||

Similar to I Shot The Sheriff, we’re starting on chord IV, going towards chord VI, although how we get to it is different.

There are three variations to this progression, the first is the opening of the first verse where we have one bar less of F#m7,

The next variation is at the end of the verse, now we don’t go to E/G#.

The final variation is the beginning of verses 2 and 3, now we have one bar less of F#m7, like this:

| F#m7 | D A | A E/G# |

The chorus goes between III – II, C#m7Bm7. This is like a minor version of the more common V – IV progression, their relative minor in fact.

The bridge is the most complicated and if you’ve searched the internet for Is This Love chords, this is the part that everyone gets wrong. here’s the correct first line:

| Bm7 C#m7 D | E D6 | D6 | D6 |

That D6 took a while to work out! Next, we go to the relative minor of E, chord III, like this:

| Bm7 C#m7 D | E D6 C#m7 | C#m7 | C#m7 |

Finally, we first recycle the chorus progression before we get a new movement:

| C#m7 | C#m7 | Bm7 | Bm7 |
| F#m7 | F#m7 | E D | C#m7 Bm7 |

And that’s all the chords for Is This Love, play along with the original recording and it’ll all make sense.

Unlike when you played along with No Woman, No Cry where you had to tune up from 440 Hz, Is This Love is actually perfectly in tune, use my free online guitar tuner at 440 Hz.

Most intermediate acoustic tunes can’t be played using just basic open-position chords. We have to move up the fretboard and play CAGED barre chords as well.

We incorporate bass lines, add licks, extend chords, and play vocal melodies. Most importantly, we’ll invent second guitar parts and play these songs together.
