Gary Moore: The Guitar Legend Who Played “Everything on 10”

Gary Moore, a legendary guitarist from Northern Ireland, is best known for his iconic album Still Got The Blues and his work with Thin Lizzy. With over 40 albums to his name, Moore is undoubtedly one of the most influential British guitarists of all time.

A true aficionado of the Gibson Les Paul and Marshall amps, Moore’s sound could best be described as “everything on 10.” His famous Les Paul originally belonged to Peter Green, who played it at much lower volumes, but Gary took it to a new level.

Initially, Parisienne Walkways was an instrumental, but Moore collaborated with Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, who wrote the lyrics, played bass, and sang on the track. Released in 1979, the song reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart and became an instant classic. Gary clearly loved the tune, as he would later reinvent it on his most successful album, Still Got The Blues.

The title track of that album, Still Got The Blues, became Gary Moore’s signature song and marked his greatest commercial success. The album also featured a number of notable guest appearances. On Oh, Pretty Woman, Moore was joined by blues legend Albert King (not to be confused with the Roy Orbison tune). Albert Collins made a guest appearance on Too Tired, while On That Kind of Woman featured none other than George Harrison. It’s clear that by this point, Moore had cemented his place as one of the greatest guitarists of his time, with the world’s top musicians eager to be part of his project.

Still Got The Blues remains Gary Moore’s most successful album and continues to be the track that defines his legacy.
