Everlong’s chords and progressions

Dave has found some nice chords for the verse in Dmaj7, Bsus2, and Gsus2. You need to tune your guitar to a drop D to make it work.

The first chord is actually without a 5th, very unusual. To get to the Bsus2, you simply play string 6, fret 9, instead of the open, detuned 6 string.

The verse is 7 bars long, also unusual. This gives us the chord progression I – VI – IV, but with the extensions and 7-bar format, it feels different. This is a great songwriting tip from Mr. Grohl.

After a few verses and some do, do, do’s over the same progression, we get a bridge which is a displaced chromatic riff that looks like this:

| (C# D E) | (E F# G F#) |

First, this leads to an A power chord, repeat it, then to A again, then repeat, then to the chorus which starts with a B5, chord VI – IV – I. same as the verse, just in a different order and without extensions – Another great songwriting tip!

| B5 | G5 | D5 | D5 |
| B5 | G5 | D5 | D5 |
| B5 | G5 | D5 | A5 |
| G5 | G5 |

To vary it, the third time, we go to chord V, an A5. Then finish off on chord IV, G5.

Everlong was the first sign that Foo Fighters were here to stay

As the second single from their second album, The Color And The Shape, Everlong did reasonably well in the charts, reaching #3 in the U.S. and Canada.

The debut album didn’t have any hits on it but on this one we find My Hero and Monkey Wrench as well, signaling that Foo Fighters may become a success after all.

As time went by and more albums were released and the band’s fame grew, Everlong ended up becoming a fan favorite.

Written about Louise Post, a woman Dave had fallen in love with, he wrote the lyrics as he was staying at a friend’s house during his divorce from Jennifer Leigh Youngblood. Louise ended up recording the “do, do, do, do’s” over the telephone line.

In 2022, when Taylor Hawkins (the band’s drummer) died from a drug overdose in Colombia, the band played Everlong as their last song earlier that night.
