Molly’s Chambers Chords: Rock N’ Roll, Modal Interchange, and Staying Cool

Using a low F#5 chord combined with an open E string, Kings of Leon crafted a simple yet memorable riff that drives the entire song.

The only variation comes in the second verse, where the second guitar enhances the riff by shifting from the low F# root on the E string up two octaves to the root and b7 on the B string, using a D-shaped voicing.

Chorus

However, Molly’s Chambers isn’t just about this riff—there are additional chords in the chorus. Here, the progression moves from A to B, then back to the riff, followed by B to D, as shown below:

| B (IIx) | A (I) |
||: F#5 (VI) (F#5/E) :||
| B (IIx) | D (IV) |

These movements push the boundaries of F#m (Aeolian, chord VI), reinforcing the song’s raw rock ‘n’ roll feel. The B chord (IIx) should technically be Bm to remain diatonic.

Alternatively, if we reinterpret F#m as chord II (Dorian), the Roman numerals shift:

| B (V) | A (IV) |
||: F#5 (II) (F#5/E) :||
| B (V) | D (bVIIx) |

Now, instead of B being outside the key, D is (bVIIx).

So which interpretation is correct? That’s the beauty of it—this ambiguity creates the song’s tension!

There are countless examples of songs straddling two modes like this; the technique is known as modal interchange.

You might be thinking, surely Kings of Leon are too cool for nerdy music theory like modal interchange? They may have simply moved their fingers around until they found a cool riff, perhaps, but that’s the end result.

Music theory isn’t a set of rules for creating—it’s a way of describing what’s happening. What you do with this knowledge is up to you… maybe just hide it behind sunglasses.

Here’s the chord chart.

You can download my chart as a PDF or in the iReal Pro format.

While iReal Pro allows you to change the key, that won’t work for Molly’s Chambers—like much rock music, the chord shapes define the sound and can’t be altered without losing their character. However, you can adjust the arrangement layout to suit your needs.

Molly's Chambers chords and TAB, verse 2.

Built on grit and a lifted line

When Kings of Leon released Youth & Young Manhood in 2003, Molly’s Chambers quickly stood out — a scrappy, swaggering track powered by sharp riffs, a relentless groove, and Caleb Followill’s unmistakable raspy vocal. What makes the song especially interesting is that it’s built on a lifted line from an old Irish folk/blues recording, woven into a modern garage-rock revival without losing its original bite.

The phrase “Molly’s chambers” comes from a 1970 track by Thin Lizzy called Whiskey in the Jar, in which the line refers to a woman’s bedroom — a nod to traditional folk lyrics. Kings of Leon didn’t just borrow the title; they turned it into a more obvious sexual reference.

Musically, Molly’s Chambers is a masterclass in doing more with less. The opening riff is nothing fancy on paper, but its delivery and chords have a tension that never quite resolves.

What makes the track compelling decades on is how raw it still sounds. There’s no gloss, no padding — just a young band throwing everything they had into a riff-driven tune that nodded to the past while kicking the door into the future. Molly’s Chambers became one of the early clues that Kings of Leon weren’t just another garage band; they were students of rock history, willing to twist old ideas into something distinctly their own.
