Daft Punk: Robots, Reviews, and Timeless Tunes
French dance duo Daft Punk began as a band called Darlin’, but changed their name after a Melody Maker review described their debut as “a daft punky thrash”.
This was back in 1992, though it wasn’t until 1997 that they released their debut album under the name Daft Punk. Two notable tunes featured on this release: Around The World and Da Funk.
In 1999, they adopted their now-iconic robot personas, wearing helmets to conceal their identities and opting out of most media appearances. Best idea ever, if you ask me!
Their follow-up album arrived in 2001, featuring two more major hits: One More Time and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. The latter was famously sampled by Kanye West for his 2007 track Stronger.
Daft Punk’s third album didn’t match the success of their first two. They then ventured into film with Electroma, before extensive touring led to a well-received live album. Afterwards, they returned to film by composing the score for Tron: Legacy.
Their biggest success came in 2013 with the lead single Get Lucky from the album Random Access Memories. The track featured Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers.
Get Lucky ranks as the fourth most played song in the U.K. between 2010 and 2020, with only Moves Like Jagger, Rolling In The Deep, and Happy ahead of it.
