Breakfast At Tiffany Chords: Learn the progressions

Breakfast At Tiffany's Guitar Lesson + TAB T

This may seem like it was made for beginners with its super-simple chord progression.

In the key of D, Breakfast At Tiffany’s verse chords are I – VI – V – I, like this:

| D (I) | Bm7 (VI) A (V) Asus4 | D (I) |

The chorus is even easier as it goes I – V – IV, like this:

| D5 (I) | A5 (V) G5 (IV) |

However, as many people who have had to endure listening to Breakfast At Tiffany’s being played by beginners may have picked up on, the strumming is fast and can easily sound very strained.

There is also a quick instrumental melody to play, and transitioning between the fast strumming and this picked line is difficult.

All this means that Breakfast At Tiffany’s provides an excellent opportunity for the beginner/intermediate guitarist to improve.

The first thing you need to work on is to divide up the strumming, here’s some member’s TAB of the chorus demonstrating how this could be done.

The second thing you need to work on is the accuracy of your picking so you can play those instrumental sections accurately. As well as practising to a metronome, these chromatic exercises will help you too.

Members get TAB for the intro, verse and instrumental sections as well, here’s a link to the complete lesson: Breakfast At Tiffany’s – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s – The ultimate one-hit wonder

As a hugely successful single, played to death by beginner guitar players and one-man bands in pubs, Breakfast At Tiffany’s did well in the charts but was slaughtered by the critics.

Peaking at #1 in the U.K., Breakfast At Tiffany’s reached the top 10 the world over, making the band behind it, Deep Blue Something, known worldwide overnight.

Some say the success of the single came from radio stations finding it useful to play in the morning as people needed a happy pick me up during breakfast time.

Named and referenced in the lyrics, the film Breakfast At Tiffany’s is the entire point of the lyrics, which concludes that if all we have in common is liking the film, we may have a future as a couple.

Being such a simple song with a relatively pointless message, Deep Blue Something has come to represent the one-hit-wonder band phenomenon like few, perhaps Sixpence None The Richer, Plain White T’s, and Eagle-Eye Cherry are the only ones that can match the feat with their hits Kiss Me, Hey There Delilah and Save Tonight.
