Breakfast at Tiffany’s Chords: A Simple Yet Effective Progression

Breakfast at Tiffany’s may seem like it was made for beginners with its super-simple chord progression. In the key of D, the verse follows the I – VI – V – I pattern:

| D (I) | Bm7 (VI) A (V) Asus4 | D (I) |

The chorus is even easier, following I – V – IV:

| D5 (I) | A5 (V) G5 (IV) |

However, many who have endured listening to beginners play Breakfast at Tiffany’s may have noticed how easily the fast strumming can sound strained.

There’s also a quick instrumental melody, and transitioning between the strumming and this picked line can be tricky.

All of this makes Breakfast at Tiffany’s a great song for beginner/intermediate guitarists to improve their skills.

First, focus on dividing up the strumming—TAB is available to help with this.

Second, work on your picking accuracy so you can play the instrumental sections cleanly. Practising with a metronome and working through chromatic exercises will help.

For TAB covering all sections, check this part of the lesson: Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Once you’ve learned the parts individually, a simple chord chart is all you’ll need to remember how to play the song. Here’s one I made for you.

This chart was created using iReal Pro. Here’s a link to that file: Breakfast at Tiffany’s chord chart iReal Pro. With the iReal Pro app, you can change the key, though it may sound a little odd.

If you’re designing a second guitar part, transposing the key and using a capo could work. However, the main guitar part should be played in the key of D.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s – The Ultimate One-Hit Wonder

A hugely successful single, Breakfast at Tiffany’s became a staple for beginner guitar players and one-man bands in pubs. While it performed well on the charts, critics were far less kind.

Peaking at #1 in the U.K. and breaking into the top 10 worldwide, the song catapulted Deep Blue Something to instant fame. Some believe its success was partly due to radio stations using it as a cheerful morning pick-me-up.

The lyrics revolve around the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, concluding that if liking the movie is all a couple has in common, it might just be enough.

As a simple song with a fairly trivial message, Breakfast at Tiffany’s has become one of the most iconic one-hit wonders. Few bands match its level of fleeting success—perhaps only Sixpence None the Richer with Kiss Me, Plain White T’s with Hey There Delilah, and Eagle-Eye Cherry with Save Tonight come close.
