Deep Blue Something: The ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ One-Hit Wonder

Deep Blue Something is an American rock band best known for their hit single Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a tune that has likely been played by acoustic guitarists in countless pubs around the world.

Originally named Leper Messiah, the band changed their name after realising that Metallica fans were showing up to their gigs, expecting a metal act (since Metallica has a song titled Leper Messiah).

Breakfast at Tiffany’s not only became a pub standard but also earned a spot on VH1’s list of the 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever, where it took #6, right after Vanilla Ice’s infamous Ice Ice Baby.

The song has often been criticised for its lyrics, with some commenting that if the only thing two people have in common is a love for one of the greatest films ever made, maybe they should reconsider their relationship.

As a classic one-hit wonder, Deep Blue Something never managed to produce another track of the same calibre. However, it’s likely that the occasional PRS cheque makes up for that!

Other songs Spytunes recorded by one-hit wonder bands include Kiss Me and Hey There Delilah.
