You’re Still The One Chords: Playing It on Acoustic and Electric Guitar

When playing You’re Still The One on electric guitar in a band with a piano player, you should focus on playing licks in the key of Eb, leaving the main job to the bass, drums, and keyboards. Your role is to add flavour with those little details.

If you’re playing on one acoustic guitar, however, you’ll need to take on the role of the drums, bass, and keyboards, essentially carrying the song. For this, think in the key of D, placing a capo on fret 1, or convince the singer to perform it a semitone below the original—most likely, they won’t even notice!

To better understand the song, the best way is to practice in the key of D, and there’s TAB available for that. Once you’re comfortable with the acoustic version, transitioning to the electric and adding licks will be much easier.

Here’s a link to the TAB lesson: You’re Still The One – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Intro

You’ll need the TAB to help with the intro chord extensions, which look like this:

| N.C | N.C D6 | D5 |
| D6(omit3) | D5 D/F# | Gsus2 Aadd4 Aadd9 |
| Dadd9 D/F# | G5 Aadd4 |

Ignoring the extensions, these are essentially I – IV – V chords.

Verse

The verse chords simplify, sticking to a I – I/3 – IV – V pattern:

||: D5 D/F# | G5 A :||

Chords I and IV are power chords here, which works well on acoustic using open-position chords.

If you’re playing You’re Still The One on electric guitar with a band, there’s no need for power chords. Instead, use triads in the key of Eb:

||: Eb Eb/G | Ab Bb :||

Bridge

The bridge begins with the I chord, but we place the 3rd in the bass immediately before transitioning to IV – V. The main difference is that the I and IV now share a bar, returning to the key of D:

| D/F# G | A |
| D5 G | A G |

Chorus

In the chorus, the chord progression changes slightly:

| D5/A (I) G5 (IV) | Em (II) A (V) |
| D5 G5 | A G5 |
| D5 G5 | Em A |
| D5 G5 | A |

Notice the subtle shift: we begin with a D5/A in the first bar for a stronger start. The movement becomes I – IV – II – V, with the second bar seeing the change.

Here’s a chord chart I made for you.

You're Still The One chords and TAB intro

Shania wrote You’re Still The One about Mutt Lang

Shania Twain faced a tough childhood, having to raise her siblings from a young age. Despite these hardships, she found solace in music and eventually launched her solo career. Though her early attempts weren’t met with instant success, she persevered and eventually found herself working with the legendary producer Mutt Lang.

Mutt Lang, renowned for his work with AC/DC on their iconic albums Highway To Hell and Back In Black, had already achieved massive success. Back In Black alone sold 50 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Lang’s next major success came with Shania’s album Come On Over, which went on to sell 40 million copies, making it the best-selling album by a female solo artist.

On Come On Over, we find classics like You’re Still The One, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, and That Don’t Impress Me Much. Shania wrote these songs, while Mutt produced them. You’re Still The One was written by Shania for her husband, Mutt Lang, at the time.

After their divorce—following Mutt’s affair with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud—singing the song must have been incredibly difficult for Shania. In a strange twist of fate, Shania later married Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne’s ex-husband. So, who’s still the one now?
