You’re Still The One Chords: Learn the progressions

You're Still The One guitar lesson + TAB

If you play You’re Still The One‘s chords on the electric guitar in a band with a piano player present, you should probably play licks, thinking in the key of Eb.

Leave playing/carrying the song to the bass, drums and keyboards and act as the one adding the nice stuff.

However, if you play this on one acoustic guitar, you need to take on the role the drums, bass and keyboards played in the band.

If you do this, you must think in the key of D and place a capo on fret 1, or alternatively, convince the singer to perform it a semitone below the original. To be honest, they probably won’t even notice!

Members get TAB for how to play in the key of D as this is the best way to fully understand the tune. Following playing like this, it would be relatively easy to move to the electric and just add the licks.

Here’s a sample of what the TAB looks like for members, this is the intro. I’ve here transcribed the organ and then summed up the band in the last two bars.

You're Still The One chords ad TAB, intro on one guitar, capo 1

The big-sounding chords here are a consequence of including all those little licks (members dive deep into why they are called what they are).

Once we get to the verse chords it gets simpler as we move from I – I/3 – IV – V, like this:

||: D5 D/F# | G5 A :||

As you can see, chords I and IV are power chords, this works well on the acoustic using open-position chords.

Should you play You’re Still The One’s chords on the electric guitar in a band, you don’t need power chords, instead, play triads, like this in the key of Eb:

||: Eb Eb/G | Ab Bb :||

The bridge starts on the I chord again, although we put that 3rd in the bass straight away before we go to IVV again, the main difference being how the I and IV now share a bar, (we’re back in the key of D!) like this:

| D/F# G | A |
| D5 G | A G |

As we repeat, we get a G chord (IV) at the end, taking us to the chorus which has these chords:

| D5/A G5 | Em A |
| D5 G5 | A G5 |
| D5 G5 | Em A |
| D5 G5 | A |

Notice the subtle changes here, we start with a D5/A because when the chorus starts, I want it to be as big as possible. The movement is now IIVIIV. The first bar remains the same, and the second bar changes.

Members get TAB for all sections, here’s a link to the complete lesson: You’re Still The One – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Shania wrote You’re Still The One about Mutt Lang!

Shania Twain had a very difficult childhood, she had to raise her brothers and sisters from an early age.

Somehow she managed to do this through singing and launching herself as a solo artist. Even though the first few attempts weren’t instant success she did make a name for herself and managed to get to a point where she started working with Mutt Lang.

Mutt is a world-renowned producer who put together AC/DC’s two biggest albums, Highway To Hell and Back In Black.

Back In Black Sold 50 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

This enormous success is closely followed by Shania’s album Come On Over which sold 40 million copies. This is the best-selling album by a female solo artist.

On Come On Over we find You’re Still The One, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, and That Don‘t Impress Me Much.

Shania wrote these songs, Mutt produced them. When it comes to You’re Still The One, she wrote it for her husband, Mutt Lang.

This must have been extremely difficult to sing following their divorce as Mutt left Shania for her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

In a strange twist of fate, Twain married Frédéric Thiébaud, the former husband of Marie-Anne! Who’s still the one now?
