Harvest Moon’s chords, progressions, and TAB
You need to lower that E string to a D in order to play it like the original, use my chromatic guitar tuner to drop the low E string.
Consisting of two chord riffs and a chorus, this one is easy once you know exactly how Neil himself plays it. Members get the note-for-note TAB to help them along.
Once you know how to do it, the chords and lyrics above will serve as a reminder. In the key of D, the verse chords move from II to that I chord using the characteristic extensions, like this:
| Em7 | Em7 | Em7 | Em7 |
| D5 Dmaj7 | Dmaj7 A/D D | D Dmaj7 | Dmaj7 A/D D |
The next verse varies this by going to chord IV, instead of II, changing that chord riff slightly as well, very clever! Looks like this:
| G | G | G | G |
||: D D6 | Dmaj7 D :||
| G | G | G | G |
||: D D6 | Dmaj7 D :||
Finally, the chorus goes between chords IV and V, maintaining the root of chord V, we could call this A11 – A as well. Looks like this:
||: G/A | G/A | A | A :||

Harvest Moon was Neil Young’s last hit!
Harvest Moon was Neil Young‘s last big tune and definitely one of my favorites of his.
Released in 1992 as a single from the album with the same name, it had been some time since Neil had dropped his best tunes, proving that he clearly still “had it”.
Since the success of Harvest Moon, Neil has released many, many more albums, in fact, he’s released more albums post-1992 than before!
However, all of Neil’s hits came between 1969 (2nd album, Cinnamon Girl) and this 1992 gem.

Intermediate Acoustic
Most intermediate acoustic tunes can’t be played using just basic open-position chords. We have to move up the fretboard and play CAGED barre chords as well.
We incorporate bass lines, add licks, extend chords, and play vocal melodies. Most importantly, we’ll invent second guitar parts and play these songs together.
