(Everything I Do) I Do It For You chords, progressions, and TAB
Search the internet for (Everything I Do) I Do It For You chords and you’ll see most results suggesting you should play standard open-position chords in the key of C, putting a capo on fret 1.
A capo on fret 1 is always awkward anyway, but when it comes to (Everything I Do) I Do It For You’s chords, it’s not just awkward, it sounds wrong.
Clearly, playing in Db and trying to fit in all those extensions you saw above is very difficult, on the acoustic maybe even impossible, so let’s look at an alternative, capo fret 4.
Now we play as if in the key of A and all of a sudden things become easier. It starts to become possible to sound like the piano on the original recording. Here’s how you could play the intro.

The verse is very similar, we just play less over the D chord and then slightly change the pattern over the E chords.

The bridge maintains that B as a bass note and joining in with the vocal melody really does make it sound classy compared with just strumming open position chords.

Finally, the chorus is super spacious. This makes the listener focus on the vocal, always a good idea!

There are three more sections to this tune. Next up is the first middle 8, this is a key change a tone down, using a capo that means we go to the key of G, like this:
| G | C | G | D |
We then move back up again and play the next four bars in A again using I – V – IIx – V, like this:
| A | E | B | E Esus4 | E |
The middle 8 takes us to a solo which goes between chords IV – I, so in the key of A (capo fret 4, remember) we play:
||: D | D (D6) | A (Asus4) | A :||
After a bridge, we get another middle 8 with new chords, (that Dm is chord IVm, very nice). Like this using a capo:
| A | E | D | Dm | Dm |
This is followed by a last chorus which now finally goes to chord IV, like this:
| A (Aadd4) | E | D (Dmaj13) | A5 |
We are now past four minutes and on the radio, we probably fade here. On the record we get the longest outro ever, using the same chords we had for the solo.
||: D | D (D6) | A (Asus4) | A :||
