Let Me Entertain You Chords: A Deep Dive into Modal Interchange
Built around a four-bar chord progression that seems to loop endlessly, Let Me Entertain You introduces a few notable variations.
The verse follows a progression of I – bIIIx – IV – I, maintaining the root of the I chord. Every other time, the IV chord takes on a sus4, as shown here:
| F (I) | Ab/F (IIIx) | Bb/F (IV) | F |
| F | Ab/F | Bb/F (Bbsus4/F) | F |
This progression breaks several harmonic rules. For instance, the IV chord typically wouldn’t feature a sus4, as it would be Lydian (with a #4).
Additionally, the bIIIx chord lies outside the key. In essence, we’re navigating through F Ionian (F, chord I), F Aeolian (for the Ab chord), and F Mixolydian (for the Bbsus4 chord), creating a unique tension through modal interchange.
For the bridge and chorus, the progression remains the same but without the F in the bass.
As a guitarist, your role will shift depending on the size of the band you’re playing with. In a larger band, your part may become more subdued.
I’ve prepared some TAB to illustrate how your playing might differ in these situations. You can access it here: Let Me Entertain You – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Once you understand the core concepts, this chord chart will allow you to improvise your part, depending on the setting.

Let Me Entertain You – The Second Big Single from Life Thru a Lens
Robbie Williams‘ epic Let Me Entertain You has the energy of a song written to open a show, much like Diana Ross’ legendary I’m Coming Out.
Released as the fifth single from his debut album Life Thru a Lens (1997), the track followed a series of setbacks—his first three singles had flopped. It was the fourth single, Angels, that became his signature song.
Having just left Take That, Robbie had a lot to prove. The pressure was on—if his solo career didn’t succeed, he risked being a laughing stock after leaving one of the world’s biggest boybands. He must have felt the tension when the first three singles didn’t take off, but also a huge sense of relief when Let Me Entertain You and Angels became the hits he desperately needed.
His next album, I’ve Been Expecting You (1998), arguably outshone the first, with hit singles such as Strong, No Regrets, and She’s The One.
