Leave The Door Open: A Deep Dive into the Chords of Silk Sonic’s Hit
There’s some serious slick chord work going on in Leave The Door Open! Bruno Mars‘s latest project, Silk Sonic, a throwback to artists like Barry White, Luther Vandross, and Earth, Wind & Fire, with a healthy dose of humour thrown in.
Let’s break down each section and see what’s happening with the chords. First up, the intro and verse, which form the main part of the song:
||: Fmaj7 | G/F | Em7 | Am7 :||
These chords are from the key of C major. However, because we start on chord IV and there’s no C chord, it feels like we’re in F Lydian.
What stands out the most is the second chord, G/F, which is quite unusual. This is a V chord with its b7 in the bass. Using Roman numerals, this progression is IV – V/b7 – III – VI.
Before moving to the bridge, the Am7 moves up with a progression like this:
| Am7 G/B C (A B C) |
The bridge introduces a modal interchange. The opening Ebmaj7 acts as chord I, as if the key of C were replaced by Cm:
| Ebmaj7 | Abmaj7 | Abmaj7 Gm7 Fm7 C11 | G11 N.C |
This makes Abmaj7 chord IV. We then descend through the key of Eb via chords III and II, Gm7 – Fm7.
The C11 is another modal interchange, as if Fm7 (chord II) were acting as chord I. Finally, G11 is chord V of the original key of C.
Leave The Door Open: Chord Transitions and Modulations from Chorus to Outro
Next, the chorus starts out like the verse:
| Fmaj7 | G/F | Em7 | Am7 |
But as the progression repeats, it changes:
| Fmaj7 | G11 N.C | Cmaj9 | A7b9 |
Instead of a G/F, we get F/G, also known as G11. This resolves to Cmaj9 (chord I). After this release, we introduce tension with an altered VI chord, A7b9, which could also be seen as Gdim7/A.
Then comes the middle 8, which features a significant amount of 11 chords:
| Abmaj7 | G11 | Abmaj7 | G11 |
| Gbmaj7 | F11 | Eb11 | Ab11 N.C |
While there’s a lot to unpack here, the concept is the same: modulations.
Abmaj7 – G11 feels like IV – IIIx, putting us back in the key of Eb. We repeat this, then move down a tone to Gbmaj7 – F11, another key change.
The Eb11 follows the same pattern, acting as a V for the final Ab11.
This 11-chord progression has taken us from the key of C up a semitone, and when the next chorus begins, we’re now in the key of Db.
The final section of Leave The Door Open is the outro, where these four chords are looped:
||: Amaj7 | Ab11 | Dbmaj9 | Bb7b9 :||
This is like the greatest hits of the chords we’ve explored. The Dbmaj9 – Bb7b9 is a familiar ending, with chord I and an altered VI in the key of Db.
The first two chords, Amaj7 and Ab11, reflect a modal interchange, with Amaj7 being chord IV and Ab11 acting as IIIx, as if we’re in the key of Dbm, not Db.
After all that, I think I need a nap. There are just so many chords in Leave The Door Open!
Here’s a chord chart, how did I manage to fit this on one page?!?
