Leave The Door Open Chords: Learn the progressions

There’s some serious slick chordal work going on here in Leave The Door Open! Bruno Mars‘s latest project Silk Sonic is a Barry White, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind & Fire throwback, although with a healthy bit of humor thrown in.

Let’s look at each section and see what he’s done with the chords, first up is the intro and verse, which is the main part of the tune.

||: Fmaj7 | G/F | Em7 | Am7 :||

These chords are from the key of C major. However, because we start on chord IV, and there is no C chord, we feel as if in F Lydian.

What stands out the most is the second chord, a G/F, very unusual. This is a V chord with its b7 in the bass. Using Roman Numerals, this progression is IV – V/b7 – III – VI.

Before we get to the bridge, the Am7 moves up using Am7G/BC, then does it again very quickly. I reckon you should first play the chords, then the bass notes only. This is why I’ve written it like this:

| Am7 G/B C (A B C) |

The bridge is a modal interchange, the opening Ebmaj7 is chord I, as if C had been Cm instead, like this:

| Ebmaj7 | Abmaj7 | Abmaj7 Gm7 Fm7 C11 | G11 N.C |

This makes Abmaj7 chord IV. We then move down the key of Eb via chords III – II, Gm7Fm7.

The C11 is another quick modal interchange, as if Fm7, chord II, was chord I. Finally, the G11 is chord V of the original key of C.

Next up, the chorus starts out like the verse, like this:

| Fmaj7 | G/F | Em7 | Am7 |

Once it repeats, things change, like this:

| Fmaj7 | G11 N.C | Cmaj9 | A7b9 |

Instead of a G/F, we get an F/G, which is also known as G11. This resolves to Cmaj9, chord I (finally!). Following this enormous release of finally being at chord I, we get tension in an altered VI chord, A7b9. You could also see this as a Gdim7/A.

Next up, we have the middle 8, which has a scary amount of 11 chords:

| Abmaj7 | G11 | Abmaj7 | G11 |
| Gbmaj7 | F11 | Eb11 | Ab11 N.C |

There is a lot to pick apart here, although really, it’s the same idea, using modulations.

Abmaj7G11 feels like IV – IIIx, so we’re back in the key of Eb. Repeat this, then move it down a tone, Gbmaj7F11, so that’s another key change.

The Eb11 is just the same concept, we keep going down a tone, and the Eb11 then acts as a V for the final chord, Ab11.

All this 11-chord malarkey has taken us from the key of C, up a semitone so when the next chorus starts, we’re in the key of Db.

The final section of Leave The Door Open is the outro, here we put these four chords on a loop:

||: Amaj7 | Ab11 | Dbmaj9 | Bb7b9 :||

This is like the greatest hits of what Leave The Door Open’s chords have exposed us to. The Dbmaj9Bb7b9 is what we’ve had at the end of a chorus, so that’s chord I and an altered VI chord in the key of Db.

This means that the first two chords are a modal interchange, so Amaj7 is chord IV, Ab11 is IIIx as if we’re in the key of Dbm, not Db.

I don’t know about you but I need to go and have a nap now, there are so may chords in Leave The Door Open!
