Leave The Door Open: A Deep Dive into the Chords of Silk Sonic’s Hit
There’s some seriously slick chord work going on in Leave The Door Open! Bruno Mars’ latest project, Silk Sonic, is a throwback to artists like Barry White, Luther Vandross, and Earth, Wind & Fire, with a healthy dose of humour thrown in.
Let’s break down each section and see what’s happening with the chords.
Intro + Verse
First up, the intro and verse, which form the main body of the song:

These chords come from the key of C major. However, because we start on chord IV and there’s no C chord, it feels more like we’re in F Lydian.
What stands out most is the second chord, G/F, which is quite unusual. This is a V chord with its b7 in the bass. Using Roman numerals, this progression is IV – V/b7 – III – VI.
Before moving to the bridge, the Am7 moves upwards with a passing progression like this:

Bridge
The bridge introduces a modal interchange. The opening Ebmaj7 acts as chord I, as if the key of C has been replaced by Cm/Eb:

This makes Abmaj7 chord IV. We then descend through the key of Eb via chords III and II: Gm7 to Fm7.
The C11 is another modal interchange, as if Fm7 (chord II) were acting as chord I. Finally, Gsus4 functions as chord V of the original key of C.
Chorus
The chorus begins the same way as the verse:

As the progression repeats, it changes to:

Instead of G/F, we now get F/G, also known as G11. This resolves to Cmaj9 (chord I). After this release, tension is introduced with an altered VI chord, A7b9, which can also be viewed as Gdim7/A.

Middle 8
Next comes the middle 8. Here, there’s an actual guitar part to copy from the original recording (see the TAB lesson). The chords are:

There’s a lot to unpack here, but the underlying concept remains the same: modulation.
Abmaj9 to G7sus4 feels like IV – IIIx, placing us back in the key of Eb. This is repeated, before moving down a tone to Gbmaj9 and F7sus4 — another key change.
The Ebm7 is the joker in the pack. The final Gbmaj7/Ab moves us up a semitone from the key of C, and when the next chorus begins, we’re now firmly in Db.
Chorus (Key Change)
The chords are the same as before, but the part can now afford to be more rhythmically busy (check the TAB). Here’s how they look in Db:

This feels like a greatest-hits summary of the chords we’ve explored. The Dbmaj9 to Bb7b9 is a familiar ending, combining chord I with an altered VI in the key of Db.
The first two chords, Amaj9 and Ab7sus4, reflect another modal interchange. Amaj9 functions as chord IV, while Ab7sus4 acts as IIIx, as if we’re briefly in the key of Dbm rather than Db.
After all that, I think I need a nap — there are just so many chords in Leave The Door Open!

Who is Silk Sonic?
Silk Sonic is a super-duo made up of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak — two acclaimed American artists who joined forces to revive classic ’70s-era soul, R&B, and funk with a modern twist. They debuted with their critically and commercially successful album An Evening with Silk Sonic in late 2021, crafted with the help of producer D’Mile.
The breakout single Leave The Door Open became a global hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and earning the duo four Grammy Awards in 2022, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Their music has continued to enjoy enduring popularity, with the debut album surpassing a billion streams on platforms such as Spotify, reflecting sustained listener engagement.
Alongside Leave The Door Open, Skate charted strongly internationally, and multiple singles from An Evening with Silk Sonic topped the Adult R&B charts, tying records for the number of number-one hits from a single album in that category. In the UK, the album also reached the Top 10 on the Official Albums Chart, underscoring its cross-Atlantic appeal.
Rather than launching a traditional global tour, Silk Sonic brought their retro spectacle to life through a Las Vegas residency titled An Evening with Silk Sonic at Park MGM in 2022. The run drew strong attendance across dozens of shows and grossed over $50 million, making it one of the higher-grossing residencies in Las Vegas.
As of late 2025 / early 2026, both artists are active separately. Bruno Mars is focusing on a new solo album, The Romantic, alongside a major international stadium tour planned for 2026, spanning North America and Europe, with Anderson .Paak joining as a supporting act on select dates.
