Are You Gonna Be My Sheila? The Rise and Fall of Jet

Australian rockers Jet are best known for their electrifying, no-nonsense anthem Are You Gonna Be My Girl.

Released as the lead single from their debut album, it may seem like an instant classic now—but it took time for their fame to spread, perhaps due to their remote base in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks to inclusion in video games and major ad campaigns, word eventually got out, and a couple of years after its release, Jet had made their mark.

With the stage set and global attention focused on their next move, Jet released their second album. Unfortunately, it was not well received—one reviewer famously gave it a zero out of ten, and none of the singles gained much traction.

Despite this, Jet still landed major tour slots alongside Tool, Muse, and The Killers. It seems that once you’re in, you’re in. They even joined The Rolling Stones as a support act—a clear sign of their enduring reputation.

After a few years—no doubt still playing Are You Gonna Be My Girl as the highlight of every show—the band returned to the studio for a third album.

Shaka Rock, released in 2009, benefited from the seasoned machine now surrounding the band. Tracks were featured in films and TV series, Aussie radio gave them regular airplay, and even Green Day brought them along for their Australian tour.

Still, nothing came close to the breakout success of Are You Gonna Be My Girl, and in 2012, Jet disbanded.

A few years later, they reunited to support Bruce Springsteen on tour—but no new material followed.
