Are You Gonna Be My Girl’s chords and progressions
Relying on 5 chords and the A Minor Pentatonic, we move between A5 – G5 – D5 in the verse.
For the bridge, it’s D5 – C5 – G5. This is still the A Minor Pentatonic.
The chorus climbs up the same scale as it goes A5 – C5 – D5. Finishing off on an E and G chord, we are set up for the verse riff again.
Are You Gonna Be My Girl’s chords really are catchy minor pentatonic rock n roll at their best, all five notes are used as 5 chords!
Are You Gonna Be My Girl – A rock standard
Are You Gonna Be My Girl never climbed that high in the charts. Instead, it was a slow burner that a few years after its 2003 release, everyone and their dog had heard and loved.
Perhaps this was down to the fact that Jet was a new band, and this was their first single from the debut album Get Born.
Being in Australia probably made it more complicated as well. Perhaps having every rock covers band pick it up to help Are You Gonna Be My Girl become part of the mainstream helped the band members dry their tears.
Often accused of ripping off Iggy Pop’s hit Lust For Life, the band has defended this by claiming that they stole the beat from You Can’t Hurry Love, something Iggy has confessed to doing as well!
