One Love Chords: Learn the progressions

The chords for this Bob Marley classic consist of two movements, only using the I, IV, V, and VI chords.

The chorus is in the key of Bb and employs this diatonic chord progression:

||: Bb (I) | F (V) |
| Eb (IV) Bb (I) | F (V) Bb (I) :||
| Eb Bb | F Bb |

Should you play it on the electric guitar in a band, play all these chords using CAGED shapes on the top strings with just an upstroke on every upbeat.

The same goes for the verse which has these four chords:

||: Bb (I) Gm (VI) | Eb (IV) Bb (I) :||

I’ve designed a TAB exercise for this in five areas of the neck, here’s a link to that part of the lesson: One Love – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Once you can execute this concept along with the original recording in all five areas, you’ll easily move to whatever area you feel like and play One Love’s chords in an improvised way.

In the same lesson, we also look at an acoustic guitar arrangement that takes the bass and drums into consideration. This is played using a capo on fret 3, thinking in the key of G.

Playing along with Bob, electric or acoustic, you need to tune down a bit, to 434Hz, use my online tuner to get on his frequency.

Once you’ve done all the work and found your way to play One Love’s chords, this chord chart s all you need.

One Love can be found on the best album ever made!

One Love is a song that Bob Marley recorded a few times. First, on his debut album in a ska, more uptempo outfit.

However, the best-known version is found on the unbelievable album Exodus (1977), linked with People Get Ready (a Curtis Mayfield cover).

In 1999, The Times magazine ranked the album #1 on their list of best albums of the 21st century, something I’m sure many musicians and artists probably agree with.

If you also take into consideration his next album and make a list of Exodus’s B-side, and the 1978 album Kaya’s A-side you get these 10 tunes in a row:

  1. Jamming
  2. Waiting In Vain
  3. Turn Your Lights Down Low
  4. Three little Birds
  5. One Love/People Get Ready
  6. Easy Skanking
  7. Kaya
  8. Is This Love
  9. Sun Is Shining
  10. Satisfy My Soul

I don’t know about you but to me, that’s the most impressive ten tunes in a row I’ve ever seen!
