Eagle-Eye Cherry: How Save Tonight Made Him an Overnight Success
Eagle-Eye Cherry’s debut single, Save Tonight, from his 1997 album Desireless, became an instant international success, making him famous overnight.
Fortunately, Eagle-Eye was well-prepared for fame. Having lived in New York, away from his native Sweden, he attended acting classes alongside Jennifer Aniston, played drums in various bands, and grew up with his already-famous sister, Neneh Cherry.
Judging by his appearance, it’s likely he bumped into Lenny Kravitz while frequenting Manhattan’s nightlife, though that’s just a guess.
His acting skills, developed in class with Jennifer, are evident in the music video for Save Tonight, where he portrays a variety of characters. It’s hard to say how much of the song’s success is due to the video, but it definitely helped!
Save Tonight hit the top 10 in 14 countries, selling at least a million copies. By 2022, the video had amassed 110 million views on YouTube and was approaching half a billion streams on Spotify.
Speaking of 2022, Eagle-Eye returned with a new track, Rising Sun (check the playlist above).
If you’re an acoustic guitarist playing in pubs or bars and aiming for a party atmosphere, Save Tonight pairs perfectly with another Swedish hit, Wake Me Up. Both songs share almost the same chord progression, though in different keys! I’d bet that Avicii used Eagle-Eye’s hit as a reference track when writing Wake Me Up, just adding a capo on fret 2!
