Mr Kool!
Lenny Kravitz was born and grew up in New York. Immersed in music from an early age, he decided to become a musician at the age of 5.
Perhaps this had something to do with his father being a jazz promoter who knew all the stars and had Duke Ellington, for his 5th birthday, play him Happy Birthday in person.
At the age of 10, he moved to Los Angeles and switched from being surrounded by the greatest jazz musicians and singers the world had ever seen to discovering The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
It seems Lenny Kravitz had the perfect childhood for a musician. In Beverly Hills High School, he was classmates with Maria McKee and Slash! Still, he had to actually do it, he had to write some tunes…
In 1985, Lenny set to work on creating his debut album, four years later he finally released Let Love Rule.
Even though reviews were mixed, saying his influences were just too many, he managed to get on tours with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie!
Perhaps they were impressed with the fact that Lenny had played almost all instruments on the album.
Following the debut, Kravitz wrote and produced Justify My Love for Madonna, as well as wrote, produced, and played most of Vanessa Paradise’s debut album.
In 1991 he released another solo album, Mama Said. This one contained the tunes It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over, and Always On The Run, a track his old classmate Slash helped out on.
This was followed up by working with some of his heroes Al Green, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Curtis Mayfield, and Bill Withers.
By now, Lenny Kravitz was rubbing shoulders with the best. What could he possibly do next?
Well, how about his signature song, Are You Gonna Go My Way? The title track from the album released in 1993 made Kravitz a superstar.
Following this peak, Lenny released two more big hits Fly Away (1998) and American Woman (1999), which was a The Who cover.
In just a decade, Lenny Kravitz had become one of the best-known rock solo artists, selling over 40 million albums.
