Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough Chords: Learn the progressions

Centred around the idea of moving between two major chords a tone apart, AB, but maintaining the bass line of B, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough‘s chords could be described as B11B, or A/BB, which is essentially the same thing.

The keyboards are making a few modifications to this, mainly through changing inversion. Above you can see I’ve put A/B sometimes, this means you should change inversion!

There’s also a Bsus2, this is to indicate that the funky guitar adds a 9. The A6/B is a nice little colour note from a string line.

Overall, most of these chords are mainly for the keyboard player, although if you are going to construct a picked funky guitar part, you need to understand the chords and various extensions.

I’ve designed some TAB for you which will help you to get going playing Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, here’s a link to the TAB lesson: Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

It’s important that you understand that the TAB is just a starting point. By understanding the chords, you can keep exploring the guitar part.

The chords following the stop in chorus 2 are for the instrumental section and are best described like this:

||: B D/E F#11 | G#m7 A B :|| x3

The fourth time you repeat, stop on G#m7, then play the verse chords again before the verse starts.

After spending some time with Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’s chords, my TAB and the original recording, this chord chart will be helpful at the gig when you need a reminder.

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough – Michael Jackson’s first single with Quincy!

As the first single from Off The Wall (1979), Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough was Michael‘s first single under Epic Records and with his new producer Quincy Jones.

He had released four solo albums before Off The Wall, but they had all been under the watchful eye of Berry Gordy and his Motown label.

Apart from the enormous success of Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, another massive single came from this album in Rock With You. Together these were a sign of what was to come from the King of Pop.

The album sold 20 million copies worldwide, which is incredible, but check this out: Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough sold 5 million digital copies in the U.S. alone. That means 5 million people bought it, again!
