Upside Down chords and progressions (lesson preview)

One of Nile Rodgers and Diana Ross‘s biggest hits, still played by DJs and working bands to this day, we find in Upside Down.

The chords are easy to remember, and so seemingly simple, but this doesn’t mean they’re not harmonically clever.

Let’s break down Upside Down’s chords and see if we can get a grip on what Mr. Rodgers has cooked up, here’s the chorus:

||: Bb B C | F Gm :||

The B chord is a chromatic passing chord, the rest are diatonic, like this: IV (#IV) – V – I – II.

Since the I chord is in the second bar, we don’t feel as if we are in F major. Instead, it feels more right to say that Upside Down is at home around chord II, Dorian.

This may seem odd since Gm is at the end of the bar, but I can’t find a better explanation for what feels like home.

When the verse comes in, we modulate up to Bbm, and this also feels like Dorian. I guess we could say that Upside Down is in G and Bb Dorian.

When you play the chords, try different CAGED shapes, using a maximum of three strings at the same time. Although A-shapes for Bb B C, an E shape for F, and an Em shape for the Gm are probably the best at the end of the day.

Play along with the original recording until you feel comfortable, as a professional guitarist, you’ll play Upside Down for years, I guarantee it!
