At first glance, Bruno Mars Treasure’s chords may seem like a simple repeating loop. However, subtle variations throughout create movement and distinction between sections. Learning these details will set you apart from the rest.
If you can choose different chord shapes in an improvised way, you’ll enjoy playing this modern classic for years to come. Let’s break down each section and uncover Treasure’s secret chord tricks.
Verse
Following the Bb11 in the intro, the verse chords are:

A key trick here is that Abmaj7 and Cm share the same notes, just with a different bass. Try using a D shape for Abmaj7 and an Em shape for Cm—they’re essentially the same thing!
The Gm – Gm7 shift adds movement, creating a subtle contrast between the verse and chorus. If you choose different shapes in an improvised way, Gm will work better sometimes (Em shape) and Gm7 others (Dm shape).
Bridge
The bridge closely mirrors the verse but ends with a Bb chord:

Chorus

Treasure is a modern classic—not just for Bruno Mars, but also for countless working bands who’ve adopted it into their setlists.
With that in mind, we want to make it as fun and musical to play as possible, moving around the neck to keep things challenging and dynamic for years to come.
Intro
The intro is best played in one way (or is it?), like this:
Verse
The verse is a feast of options—here’s idea 1:
We start with an E shape for Abmaj7, then move down using Em-shaped triads, except for the quick Fmadd9, Cm7, and Bb6, which add extra colour.
Next, we move up the neck: Gm becomes Gm7, Fm turns into Fm7 and then Fm9. Gm is again Gm7, Cm7 changes to Cm, and Bb6 simplifies to Bb.
The final verse idea goes even further up the neck:
I particularly like the Bb6 at the end. Practise all these variations with the aim of blending them together in an improvised way.
Bridge
The bridge follows the same pattern as the verse but ends on a Bb, which can be played as an octave:
I also like hitting only string 2 on the upstroke.

The final Bb11 echoes the intro. Once you can play all this TAB, stop staring at it and start improvising your chord shapes as you play with the backing tracks.
