A key trick here is that Abmaj7 and Cm share the same notes, just with different bass notes. Try using a D shape for Abmaj7 and an Em shape for Cm—they’re essentially the same thing!
The Gm – Gm7 shift adds movement, creating a subtle contrast between the verse and chorus. If you choose different shapes in an improvised way, Gm will work better sometimes (Em shape) and Gm7 others (Dm shape).

Treasure Took Inspiration from Baby I’m Yours
Treasure was released in May 2013 as a single from Bruno Mars’ 2012 album Unorthodox Jukebox. Two years earlier—the same year Bruno released his debut album—French artist Breakbot had released an EP featuring Baby I’m Yours (check the playlist at the top of the page).
Bruno initially enquired about covering Baby I’m Yours for his second album but was turned down. Not one to take no for an answer, he used it as inspiration to write one of his biggest hits, Treasure. Breakbot later called this out, and the song was subsequently re-registered, giving Breakbot a songwriting credit.
There’s an important lesson here for all aspiring songwriters—keep going, don’t let setbacks stop you, and find a way to move forward. And if you end up reworking someone’s song into a hit, make sure to share the credit.
