Ann Peebles: The Queen of Hi Records

Ann Peebles is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, best known for her iconic Memphis Soul albums of the ’70s. Two of her better-known tunes, I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down and I Can’t Stand the Rain, helped solidify her place in music history.

Originally released in 1973 on Hi Records (the same label as Al Green), I Can’t Stand the Rain was both the title track and the name of the album. Over time, I Can’t Stand the Rain has gained even more popularity, especially after Tina Turner’s cover, which likely contributed to its enduring legacy. However, despite the song’s success, Ann Peebles herself never fully enjoyed the same level of fame.

Behind the scenes, Peebles found success as a songwriter, penning Breaking Up Somebody’s Home, which was covered by Albert King and later by Bette Midler.

As the rise of Disco overtook the music scene, Ann Peebles took a step back. She resurfaced in 1989, releasing new material throughout the ’90s under Rounder Records, though none of these tunes managed to bring her back to the same level of recognition.

Her final release came in 2008, when she collaborated on Cyndi Lauper’s Memphis Blues album. In 2014, Ann was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, but by then, she had retired following a stroke in 2012.
