Cyndi Lauper: From Girls Just Wanna Have Fun to Kinky Boots

For a female pop artist, Cyndi Lauper was relatively late to the game—she had just turned 30 when she released her debut album in 1983.

Clearly not rushed, She’s So Unusual became a global success. With four top 5 singles, Cyndi broke records as the first female debut artist to achieve this.

Two of the songs from the album became enduring classics: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time, the latter being her own composition.

While Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was originally released by Robert Hazard in 1979, it’s Cyndi’s version we all know. Despite more than thirty other artists covering it, hers remains the definitive take on this female anthem.

Riding the wave of success, her next release came in 1985 with The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough, recorded for the beloved kids’ film The Goonies.

In 1986, she followed up with her second album True Colors, led by another signature hit of the same name.

Her third album, A Night to Remember (not to be confused with the Shalamar song), produced one final worldwide hit in I Drove All Night. Originally written for Roy Orbison, delays meant Cyndi released her version first.

In total, she recorded eleven studio albums, though only the first three featured global hits.

In 2003, Cyndi explored a different direction with the jazz album At Last, which included not only the title track but also classics like My Baby Just Cares For Me, Walk On By, Unchained Melody, and You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me by Smokey Robinson.

Her next major triumph came in 2012 with the debut of Kinky Boots in Chicago—a musical set in England about a struggling shoe factory that begins making high-heeled boots for drag queens to survive. Based on the 2005 film of the same name, it became a major Broadway hit.
