Young Hearts Run Free Chords: Learn the progressions
Essentially a I – IV – V song, Young Hearts gets its slick sound from chord extensions such as 6, maj7, and 11.
Compare this chord progression with that of My Guy, and the opening 11 chords with Never Too Much and Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough. There are subtle differences that when you can hear will get you to the next level of chord recognition.
The intro and bridge of Young Hearts Run Free is a combination of C11 and C9. Personally, I like to move from 11 to 9 in the first bar, then in the second, move more between them. Do this on a loop and you can create some great chord licks.
When the verse starts, the F first moves from maj7 to 6, then at the end, from F to F6, the horn riff makes this subtle difference obvious.
The Bb moves, just like My Guy, from Bb – Bb6 – Bbmaj7 – Bb6, so more movement than the F had.
For the chorus, we start on the IV chord (Bb) and now add a 6, just to quickly take it away, I’ve indicated this by putting the Bb6 in brackets for Young Hearts chords and lyrics above.
This leaves us with the final F. During the chorus we start on Fmaj7, go down to F6, and then play the horn riff from F to F6.
Young Hearts Run Free was born out of a conversation between David and Candi!
Born out of a conversation Candi Staton had with songwriter David Crawford about her relationship over lunch, Young Hearts Run Free is a song David instantly knew was going to last forever.
Clearly, he was right as many decades later, this classic Disco smash hit is still played on the radio, as well as by bands and DJs.
Originally released in 1976 it reached #1 in the U.S., #2 in the U.K., and #4 in Australia.
Apart from every working Disco band under the sun playing Young Hearts every Saturday, there has been one notable cover in 1996 by Kym Gazelle for the soundtrack of Romeo + Juliet.
Study the chords and lyrics above carefully to work out how Young Hearts was put together.
