What’s My Age Again Chords: Learn the progressions
The initial clean riff for the intro and verse goes D#m/B – D#m/F# – D#m/C# – D#m, this is chord VI with the bass line of chord IV – I – V – VI.
In a later verse, we play these chords instead. B5 – F#5 – C#5 – D#5.
The chorus is I – V – VI – IV, #3 on my top 10 chord progression list as “the safe bet for modern hits”. No Woman No Cry, I’m Yours, I Try, So Lonely, the list is long of modern hits using this chord progression.
In the intermediate acoustic course, during the lessons for I’m Yours, I break down how different hit songs’ melodies take advantage of this chord progression.
What’s My Age Again’s vocal melody would have been in that lesson as well, had I discovered the song a couple of years earlier.
What’s My Age Again? was Blink-182’s breakthrough single!
Blink 182’s album Enema Of The State was a huge success.
Produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day) and with a new drummer in Travis Barker, the band had found their calling – to describe the difficult life of an immature and spoilt male American 20-something.
What’s My Age Again? Might be the song on the album that describes this best with its carefree skate-punk rock riffs and streaking music video. It’s perhaps not surprising that the song originally was called Peter Pan syndrome.
As the lead single off the album, it reached #2 in the U.S. and would come to represent the moment when Blink 182 crossed over to pop/punk mainstream.
The music video had a huge impact. The members are pictured running around naked in L.A., annoying everyone. This is intercut with them playing in an infinity white room.
The woman pictured on the cover of the album, porn star Janine Lindemulder is also featured in the music video.
Study the chords and lyrics, it starts with an arpeggiated clean guitar riff.
