Watermelon Sugar Chords: Learn the progressions
If you think of each mode as a feeling, it becomes clear why we want to hear Watermelon Sugar’s four-chord loop over and over.
Dorian (II) is perhaps slightly sad but there’s a feeling of hope, striving towards something. Aeolian (VI) is the saddest, Ionian (I) is happy and settled. Mixolydian (V) is determined that it wants to resolve.
So when the chords go II – VI – I – V, we feel sad but with hope, sad, happy, and want to resolve, like this in the key of C:

To keep our interest up there are different sections (verse, bridge, chorus, tag), but they all with the same chord progression.
We also have breakdown sections, new parts coming in (verse 2), and perhaps most importantly, stops.
Should you play this tune with a band, it would be a good idea to nail all those stops, that’s what will make you sound like a pro.

Watermelon Sugar is one of Harry Styles’s best tunes!
Harry Styles (formerly of the boy band One Direction) released Watermelon Sugar as a single from his second album, Fine Line (2019).
With combined sales of over 10 million, it was the best-performing track off the album and a far cry from the teenage bubble gum stuff One Direction churned out.
Before Watermelon Sugar, Harry had some other decent tunes, starting with his debut single Sign of The Times (2017), not to be confused with the Prince hit!
Adore You (2020) from the same album as Watermelon Sugar isn’t too bad either.
Harry’s last big tune came in 2022 on his latest album Harry’s House in As It Was. It sounds a bit like The Weeknd who sounds a bit like A-ha.
So perhaps this is not groundbreaking stuff but it’s better than One Direction!
