One of the Best Alternative Indie Rock Bands of the ’90s: The Verve’s Rise and Legacy

The Verve was a British alternative rock band that formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester, in 1990. Among their biggest hits were Bitter Sweet Symphony, Lucky Man, and The Drugs Don’t Work.

From their full-length debut album, A Storm In Heaven, critics consistently regarded The Verve as one of the best British bands of the ’90s. Alongside iconic groups like Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, The Charlatans, Blur, Oasis, and Elbow, The Verve became a defining part of the U.K. music scene in the ’90s.

Despite their success, the band faced internal conflict, lawsuits, and struggles with drugs and alcohol. These issues led to their breakup in 1999. Following the dissolution of The Verve, lead singer Richard Ashcroft pursued a solo career, though he never reached the same commercial heights as the band did with Urban Hymns, widely regarded as their best album.

In 2007, The Verve reunited, and tickets for their tour sold out in just twenty minutes, signalling their enduring popularity. In 2021, Richard Ashcroft returned with a new album, but rather than releasing fresh material or a greatest hits collection, he chose to re-record some of his best songs. This compilation, titled Acoustic Hymns Vol 1, includes a collaboration with former Oasis frontman and close friend, Liam Gallagher, on the track C’mon People (We’re Making It Now).
