Oasis: The Most Successful British Band of the ’90s
Oasis was an English rock band fronted by brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher—Noel as the principal songwriter and guitarist, and Liam as the unmistakable lead vocalist.
Their biggest tunes include Don’t Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova, Live Forever, Stand By Me, Morning Glory, and the anthemic Wonderwall, a song that arguably defined a generation.
With eight #1 singles, fifteen NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Awards, and five BRIT Awards, The Guinness Book of Hit Singles and Albums officially named Oasis the most successful act of the 1990s in the U.K.
As British festival culture gained popularity throughout the decade, Oasis came to represent the gold standard of headline acts. Their presence at major events like Glastonbury shaped expectations of what a festival headliner should deliver.
By the 2000s, Oasis and Wonderwall had become synonymous with the spirit of Glastonbury. When Jay-Z was booked to headline in 2008, it stirred controversy, with some arguing Glastonbury should remain a platform for British bands. Jay-Z responded in iconic fashion—by opening his set with Wonderwall.
The following year, when Oasis cancelled their V Festival performance last minute, Snow Patrol took their place and performed Wonderwall in tribute, proving just how iconic the band and their songs had become.
