From Burn, Baby, Burn to Bern, Baby, Bern: The Story of The Trammps
Best known for their hugely successful single Disco Inferno, The Trammps were among the world’s first disco bands.
Formed in 1972, The Trammps initially found success on the R&B charts, though nothing compared to the massive impact of their 1976 hit Disco Inferno. The song’s popularity was further amplified by its inclusion in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack the following year. In 1993, a cover of the song by Tina Turner also kept the band’s legacy alive, ensuring that Disco Inferno remained firmly in the public consciousness.
Even as late as the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Disco Inferno experienced a resurgence when Bernie Sanders’ supporters chanted “Bern, Baby, Bern!” to the tune, showing just how timeless the song has become.
Let’s also not forget the countless disco bands who have kept this classic alive by including it in their setlists since the late ’70s.
However, to say that all of The Trammps’ success is solely due to Disco Inferno would be an exaggeration. The band also enjoyed other hits, such as Hold Back the Night, That’s Where the Happy People Go, and The Night the Lights Went Out.
